Hello. I am just beginning to research my family in Norway. I found them in the 1865 census, but I hope someone can help me understand what I found:
• Ingebrigt Osmundsen, Føderaadsmand, born at Sveens Præstegjeld in 1799 • Anna Olsdatter, born at Sveens Præstegjeld in 1800 • Martha Ingebrigtsdatter, hjælper sin Moderen med Huusholdningen, born at Sveens Præstegjeld in 1844
They lived at Rossehoug (Nordskog), Hordaland. Municipality Sveio.
I have found Nordskog on the map near Sveio. Is Nordskog the farm name, or is Rossehoug the farm name? I can't find where this is. Where is Sveens Praestegjeld? Also, are you able to translate their occupations for me?
Thank you, Sara Bristol Washington state, USA

Føderaadsmand: At some time before the cencus he has decided he's too old (or too sick) to run his farm any more and has given/sold the farm to somebody else on the condition that the new owner lets him stay on the farm and get food and cloths - i e are taken care of.
This must be seen in connection with
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61216&variabel=0&postnr=1922&fulle=true&spraak=n
where we learn that this someone is his son Osmund Ingebrigtsen, farmowner, farmer, 37, who's married to Hansine hansdatter, 33, and that she has an illegitim son ("hendes uægte søn), Ole Klemmetsen, 13. All born in Sveen.
"hjælper sin moderen med Huusholdningen" means litturally helping her mother with the housekeeping.
Sveens præstegjeld is (probably) an old form of Sveio muicipality. The confusing farm name means that the live on Rossehoug - a (previous) part of the bigger farm Nordskog.
Hope this is to some help...

askeroi,
Thank you for your help. This is very exciting information for us. My grandmother (a Knutson) has been researching her family in the USA for many years, but we have only recently discovered them in Norway.
Are you able to help me with two more 1865 census entries?
Domicile: Gresvold, Tysvær Sjur Knudsen, Husmand med Jord faar hjelp af Faticassen, born 1798 at Skaanevig Prgj.
What is this occupation? Also, is Skaanevig the same as Skanevik?
Location: Kristiania Johan Halvorsen, Seildugsarbeider, born 1838 at Næs Romerige.
What is this occupation? Do you know how I can locate Næs Romerige?
Thank you, Sara |

Næs Romerige is nowadays spelled Nes, Romerike. Nes is a municipality in Akershus county, north east of the capital Oslo. [Approx. halfway between Oslo and Kongsvinger]
Sjur Knudsen, cotter with land, receives some benefits from the poor relief fund, born 1798 in Skaanevig parish. (Must be Skånevik in Etne municipality, Hordaland county.)
Johan Halvorsen, canvas - worker. (canvas used for sailboats)
