I would please like some help in tracking down any information on my disappeared great great aunt, if there are any descendents, where she or her descendents lived. I have placed this post here because I need connecting information from Norway to the ship to the possible midwestern spots where she may have emigrated.
Her whole family is very complicated.
Guro Åsmundsdatter, Veum Sept 17 1838, Fyresdal Telmk, -died in USA? Guro may have emigrated in the year 1856. Guro emigrated alone, that is, without family members from her father's side.
Father Åsmund Svennungsson, Veum born 1809, death, USA, year? Mother Targjar/Torgjerd Tolvsdatter, Vik born 1807, died 1845 in Fyresdal, Telmk, Norway
Guro's Siblings who emigrated were:
Brother who emigrated in the year 1853 by himself Svennung Osmundsen, b. 1833 name changed to William Adsmond Death 1917, Tennessee 6 children who lived to adulthood. Only Wife: Margit Kittleson, Rinde
Other places that Svennung lived: Black River Falls, WI, (Jackson County) from 1853-1855 Logrolling operation Chicago, IL, from 1855-1860 Mercantile business, with partner, Johnson Mississippi Marine Brigade, Union, from 1861-1865 Civil War Service Watonwan, MN, from 1865-1891, Farmer DeerLodge, TN, from 1891-1917, Farmer Note: Svennung is obvious to me and not disappeared; he is my great grandfather.
Sister who emigrated in the year 1852 with her father, Åsmund Svennungsson, Veum: Joruund Osmundsdr name changed to: Jane Johnson who lived in Bismarck, ND. Born May 11 1836 Death Date ? Place of death: Bismarck, ND (Burleigh County) ? Jane had three children: Mary, 1857, Walter 1859, William, 1863. Only husband: Hauley Johnson, born USA. Other places lived: Indiana, Red Wing, MN (Goodhue County); Bismarck, ND (Burleigh County). Notes: Joruund/Jane was still living with daughter Mary Johnson Ryan when the 1930 census was taken. It would be nice to know more about Joruund, if it is incidental to our discovery of Guro.
Guro's Half Siblings who were born here in the USA, children of Åsmund Svennungsson, Veum:
Brothers Henry William, 1857 and Iver, 1855 Adsmond were born in the USA. Henry William was a well known local politician in and around Pueblo and Otero Counties, in Colorado. Iver was a miner and prospector in Pueblo, Colorado and Caldwell, Idaho. Both Henry William and Iver were buried in Caldwell, Idaho.
Guro's Half Brothers who were born in Telemark, children of Åsmund Svennungsson, Veum: Svend/Svein b.1831 -there is no evidence that he emigrated to the USA. Gunder/Gunner b. 1832 may have emigrated to the USA. Ole/Olav b. 1847 may have emigrated to Fargo, North Dakota in the 1880's. He probably changed his last name.
It is unclear if Guro knew about the existence of her half brothers, Henry William, Iver, Ole, Gunder and Svend. It is unclear if Guro ever met up with her father again.
Guro's father, Åsmund/Osmund disappeared completely from the life of his son, Svennung, after he (Åsmund) left his second wife in Wisconsin, early 1860's. Guro's father had some connection to his sons Henry William and Iver, children of this second wife in Wisconsin, after they moved out to Pueblo, Colorado, as adults in 1880. This does not prove that he was still living at that time.

My great great aunt, Guro Asmundsdatter, b.1838, emigrated in by herself in 1856. In her birth record, there is a small accent mark above the u in her first name.
Her father, brother, sister, and the woman who would have been her step mother (had she not disappeared,) all emigrated in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854. We have no ships information on them.
No one knew of Guro's emigration in 1856 until this year when I was doing family research, when we discovered an intent to board ship notice.
Guro's sister, Joruund (Jane Johnson)b. 1836, lived in Goodhue County, MN; and Burleigh County, ND., and was still living there in 1930. Guro's sister broke contact with her father, and little is known about her life in our family.
Guro's brother, Svennung (William Adsmond)b. 1834, lived in Watonwan County, MN and Deer Lodge, TN. Her step brothers, Hans (HW Adsmond)b. 1857 and Iver Adsmond b. 1855 grew up in LaCrosse, WI in Trempealeau County.
Guro's father, Asmund Svennungson Veum, b. 1809 disappeared after Hans and Iver were born. I have found that he had many girlfriends and children, both in Fyresdal, Telemark, Norway, and throughout the United States, though these are the only traces of him.
Note: There is another Guro Asmundsdatter from her time period, born a few years later, who is listed on the web, but she is not the one whom I seek. |

The little accent mark over the u is just an old way of writing u - probably just to ensure that it's not read ii (two i's).
Guro's father Åsmund Sveinungsson was the son of Sveinung Ivarsson, Veum (1773 - 1858) and second wife Torbjørg Åvaldsdotter, Ormtveit, Vrådal according to the book Bendik Veum: Fyresdal, I, Ættebok 1943.
The same book gives Ivar Sveinungsson, Veum ( ? - 1788), as his father again and Guro Olavsdotter ( ? - 1821, 73 years) as his mother. Ivar came from the Fosshøl farm in Brunkeberg (a place I unfortunately know nothing about). Where his wife comes from is not mentioned.
Guro's mother was born 1791 to Åvald Tovsson, Ormtveit (1760 - 1809) and wife Gjertrud Pettersdotter Mandt, Skafså.
Åvald again was the son of Tov Åvaldsson, Ormtveit (1725 - ?)and Torbjørg Eivindsdotter, Dale ( 1731 - dead giving birth 1777).
Tov was the son of Åvald Guttormsson, Ormtveit ( ? - 1741) and his wife Hæge Åvaldsdotter, Ormtveit (she was the daughetr of her husbands brother).
Åvald was the son of Guttorm Åvaldsson, Ormtveit ( ? - 1701) and wife Hæge Eivindsdotter, Dale.
Guttorm was the son of Åvald Såmundsson, Bekkerhus ( ? - 1669) and first wife Hæge Åvaldsdotter.
Torbjørg Eivindsdotter, Dale was the daughter of Eivind Tallaksson, Dale (? - 1738) and wife Rannei Salvesdotter, Haugen.
Eivind was the son of Talleiv Eivindsson, Dale and Torbjørg Ådnesdotter, Tveiten.
Talleiv was the son of Eivind Tovsson, Dale and Gudrid Ulvsdotter, Foldsæ. They were too the parents of the above mentioned Hæge Eivindsdotter.
Gurid was the daughter of Ulv Ånundsson, Foldsæ (mentioned 1628). His wife is not known.
The Mandt (Guro's mother's mother) family is pretty well known in Telemark. Unfortunately I haven't noted down anything - and the family didn't get hold of the Skafså farm untill around 1800 by (Gjertrud's brother?) Lars Pettersson Mandt (so I couldn't find anything under that farm in Mo, Telemark.
Try starting a new debate on her, stating her full name. Some may recognize it.
GOOD LUCK.
P.S.
Guro wasn't an Asmundsdaughter - she was an Åsmundsdaughter. If you can't type the norwegian letter Å then use Aa, as Åsmund and Asmund are two different names... |

You really didn't say what information you were looking for; family in Norway, passenger records, family in America On all of them or just Guro? Providing links to the sites you have found them on would help people look for information. |

Thank you for the help, particularly of the laying out of the Bendik Veum verbatim. It was very useful to have the intrepretive work there, and I appreciate it.
I have Norwegian American Historical Association/St Olaf's searching for information on her father.
I am getting ready to ask Vesterheim to do a search on her sister, Joruund.
I wanted to see what ideas this group had first, in case I had missed some book, some reference regarding Goru.
For now, though, Guro's birthdate is Sept 17 1838 and her christening date is Oct 21 1838.
Since she disappeared on the USA side, but I can not prove that she boarded a boat, I would like to know if anyone can locate any record of her in any book or document in the midwest, since that is where her family tended to first settle.
I have thoroughly searched Ancestry.com and the world wide web. I have been using film # 278278 of the Latter Day Saints. I have also sought help from those on the Norway listserve.
Many thanks- Sue |

Guro
Database that carries the information on my family from Bendik Veum & other genealogist's entries:
http://www.vest-telemark.no/_privat/slekt.asp
It's all in Norsk, but there's an English glossary to help. It is spelling sensitive, so you will need to type in Aasmund Sveinungsson. Pick the one that is Aasmund Sveinungsson Veum. That's Guro's father, and his family line. One genealogist writes that 'It appears that Guro's father, Aasmund emigrated first from Fyresdal to Hjartsdal, and then to the USA from there.'
As you can see, very little is known about the USA part. |
