This is my first time on this site. It is very impressive. I am looking for the ancestors of and the ship that Carl (Karl) Henrik Christian Verdich came over on. I am also interested in the ancestors of his wife Maren Dorthea Charlotte Lorbauer

This is what I have so far.

Carl (Karl) Henrik Christian Verdich b. 1810 Denmark
m. Maren Dorthea Carlotte Lorbauer in Norway.

Children all born in Norway:

Karoline Verdich 1851
Kristine Verdich 1857/8
Hans Verdich 1858/9 m. Rose Hannaman 1882 in Illinois USA
Bertha Verdich 1866

I do believe that Hans is my great-grandfather. I would like to find the family on the passenger ship and trace them to Chicago Illinois.
Thank you so much.
Joan

As an added note: the family was still in Norway in 1875 on the Hamang farm in Bærum.
Thanks.

If you go into Familysearch.org and search under Verdich, records for Carl Henrik Christian Verdich and Maren Lorbauer comes up. It indicates they were both born in Oslo, Akerhus, Norway.

From another message board I see that you have found Hans in the 1900 Cook County census. It indicates that Hans immigrated in 1879. He would have been about 21 so he may have immigrated without his family. It also says his father was born in Denmark and his mother in Germany. The census records have many errors in them.

In the 1875 census, they are at Asker Municipality, Akershus, Hamang, Carl H. Verdick is a widower, born in Viborg. All the children born in Kristiania.

In the 1865 census, they are at Hamang, Karl H. Verdch, born Danmark and Dorthea Verdch, born Kristiania.

The Family History Center has microfilmed church records for Asker, Akershus, Norway:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=69624&disp=Kirkeb%C3%B8ker++

You could find confirmation records, Dorthea's death between 1865 and 1875, moving out registers and other information.

Hi,
Hans Werdich (20 y) from Bærum, left Oslo on Aug. 22nd, 1879. click here
His was a blacksmith, and was headed for Chicago Ill. with the ship Hero.

The ship "Hero" was a feeder ship which prob. took him to Hull, England. The "normal" route from Hull was by train to Liverpool, and then crossing the Atlantic with a new ship.

Bærum is in the Asker area, a suburb of Christiania (ie. Oslo).

Btw; Carl Henrik Christian Verdich's profession was a "Proprietær", ie Landowner.
"Proprietær" was a word designating occupation for many Danish Landowners, they where often senior public servants and the Land was given to them by the Danish/Norwegian King.
So he must be born in Viborg, Denmark.

And Lohrbauer must be of German origin..., it sounds very German...
Here is a link to someone researching John Ludig Lohrbauer's family: click here
