My grandfather, Hans T. Suby, came to America from Telemark, Norway, in October, 1879. Are there any records relating to his departure in Norway. (I can find none relating to his arrival in America.)

Hello Bruno

Your grandfather would most likely have departed from Christiania (now Oslo), that is where I would start looking. There are emigration records set up by the police for emigrants leaving Norway. The records are in process of being digitalized, and most of them are now made available online at the Digitalarkivet. To find out more about records, read our article about "Hunting Passenger Lists"

Heisann Bruno,
There were one Hans Tollefsen Sundbø, 25 from Kviteseid (Hvideseid), Telemark leaving from Christiania October 4, 1878 on the S/S Angelo for Hull, according to the record “Emigrants from Telemark” This Person is named Hans Tollefsen Smedbøe at Digitalarkivet. There are however no farm namd Sundbø or Smedbø in Kvitseid according to the census of 1865. There was one farm called Subø. One of the kids on this farm was Hans Tellefsen Subø, 13 He is likely the same person as Hans T. Sundbø.!
