Ancestry.com has a new facility, which readers of this forum might find interesting and useful. Go to the URL below, and type in a surname or first name and surname. A map will show you the number of families with that surname living in each state in the 1920 census, and the percentage of the people with that surname who lived in that state. The 1920 census is a good one for most descendants of Norwegian immigrants. Ancestry has bought into the Dictionary of American Family Names, and if that surname is listed there, you will also get an explanation of the name below the distribution on the map. Happy hunting!
