Ooops! hit the wrong button! Still looking to see if anyone has any suggestions for finding a ship/passenger list on my Great, Great Grandfather, Halvor Halvorson born: 1840
wife: Abigal/Abigael Andersdatter born: 1842 & (7) children.
Have them on emigration out of Stavanger/Digitalarkivet 1882, but no mention of ship to trace..might have traveled and boarded a larger vessel out of England.
Dont know where they landed either...more suggestions are welcome!!! Stacey

As you know - the registers for the port of Stavanger were greatly destroyed. You might never learn the name of the ship they departed that port on.

Their choices for port of arrival in America would have been many. As I said in response to your other posting on the same subject my ancestors who settled nearby in that part of Iowa about that time period entered through the port of Quebec. I found proof of their arrivals on specific ships by studying the passenger lists for that port that were copied onto LDS microfilm.
But their were other choices for arrivals - arrivals for such ports as New York, Baltimore, Boston, Galveston TX, etc. are also available on microfilm of the US National Archives or on copies through the LDS Family History library network of Family History Centers around the world.

There is a helpful book that you might want to read - it is entitled "They Came in Ships".
