I can't read or speak Norwegian, but, have post cards that we are trying to decypher.

One I have is a photo of a farm. I know the farm was in Hjelmeland. But there is a dash then the word Krame.

We have started to trace some lines in our genealogy and have so far 5 generations back on my mothers-mothers side. We have some work on my grandmothers-father.

I would love to k.now if this was a farm that was part of the family history. As I am sure my grandmother would be thrilled!
She has no idea what we are up to. Her 87th birthday is this August and we would like to surprise her with our information!

Great-grandmother was Karina Pedersdtr. Bjelland born 1892.
Great-grandfather was Nils T. Hetland born September 15,1879.

Thank you for any information!

Hjelmeland is in Rogaland, Norway. The 1900 Norwegian census shows farms in Hjelmeland by the names of Bjelland, Hetland and Kvame.
Karine lives with her family on the Bjelland farm at the time of the 1900 census -

Nils family must have made some name changes through the years (to become more 'modern'?) - I think he lives on a farm by the name of Hetland in the 1900 census and later uses the middle initial T. as a reference to the patronymic surname of his father -

Hjelmeland parish records can be researched on microfilm available at the LDS Family History Centers and the online LDS library catalog also indicates that there does exist a published history/genealogy book for that district, "Hjelmeland : gardar og folk" by Trygve Brandal.

You can find good advice about how to use these types of Norwegian records and books in this collection (and also a list of words for translations) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Another online word list which is very helpful at - http://home.online.no/%7Eotjoerge/files/word.htm
