I don't know how to find the name of the ship my grandfather took from Norway to New York. He is on the emigrant list as Syver Stenseth March 3 1900. Can you help? Karen Stevens

Hi,
"Syver Stensat", 23, from Etnedalen, arrived in New York on March 14th, 1900, with the ship The Oceanic. Sailing from Liverpool on March 7th.

Here is the ships's manifest, where he is listed on line #3: click here

Final destinaton is Portland, N Dakota. He is going to his uncle.

As you've seen earlier, he went with the ship S/S Angelo from Christiania to Hull.

He departed from Kristiania (Oslo) on the S/S Angelo of the Wilson Line for Hull England. From Hull he crossed by train to Liverpool. In Liverpool he boarded the S/S Oceanic of the White Star Line for New York where he arrived on March 14th. In the Ellis Island database he is listed as Syver Stensat. The ticket for the trip was bought in Norway for 236 Norwegian Kroner. The annual wages for a servant in the rural areas in 1900 was 218 Norwegian Kroner.

I'm impressed with what you found for Karen. Let's see if you can find my grandfather. His name is Jens Peter Andersen, the ship the S/S United States, the date is roughly 12 May 1911, Copenhagen to New York.

Thanks,
Stuart
