My Great grandparents Anders and Maria Johansen, were aboard the Hovding which left Christiania in May 1872. Also with them was their daughter Louisa (Albertina) whoc was about one year old when they left Norway. How can I find out any information prior to them leaving Norway - their marriage or Louisa's birth for instance. Hope someone can help.
They settled in Norsewood, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Maybe I have some relatives in Norway who are trying to put the pieces together and we can help each other

Thanks

You can find them here leaving Norway:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=25042&merk=25042#ovre
Their residence is stated as Vennersborg. Anders is age 28 years, Marie is 29 years, Louise 1.5 years.

Maybe someone with more knowledge of Norwegian geography could help you find Anders and Marie in the 1865 census.

Thank you very much for that quick reply. I will have to check that out, I understood Marie came from Frederickstaad.
They sure are very difficult to research aren't they, but as you say the 1865 census would sure help.
Thanks again

Have you had a look on some of the NZ Sites?
http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/cemetery/graves-list.html
There are Findsen's listed in the Norsewood Cemetery
Also the passenger list http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/ships/1872-hovding-passenger-list.html
Good luck with it - let me know if I can help

Randi FINNSDATTER: 1829-1910
http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/family-trees/johannesen-johan-descendants.html
Arrived in New Zealand 1873 aboard SS Høvding, aged 44 years

Christoffer FINNSEN: 1834-1???
http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/f/finnsen-christoffer.html
Arrived in New Zealand 1872 aboard SS Høvding, aged 38 years

Christoffer and Randi were brother and sister. Christoffer came to NZ in 1872, Randi the following year.

The spelling of FINNSEN seems to have been changed to FINDSEN in NZ.

I am not sure who the C. FINDSEN at the cemetery is as I don't have any info.

DarrinJack, Hopkins_02- are you still out here? I know it has been a very long time! I just found out through Ancestry that I am related to Rangdi and Christoffer! Their brother Eric didn't go to NZ, he selected the US about 10 years after Rangdi left for NZ. His son was my great-grandfather. I am currently reading Johanna's world, a book about their journey to NZ from Norway.

Lester, It is nice to meet you! I guess we are related! I found this family line via DNA matches to a Dennis Candy in NZ who also lives in the Southern part of the North Island. He and his son were both matches! He told me about Johanna's World and having a Finn (Find) Hansen in his family tree!

I wish I had known of the connection when my family was in New Zealand a few years ago!

I am in New Hampshire in the US. Are you on Ancestry or any of the other websites?
