I've been trying to find out more about my Norwegian great grandfather Christian Frederick Bonnevie. According to the family stories, he died c1884 at sea, or on the Great Lakes. His widow, Ida Mathilde Holte (who immigrated from Aurskog, Akershus, Norway with her family around 1881) remarried and never talked about him. Does any one know where I can find more about the ship Aurora? I've found it listed as being in the UK in 1881, with Christian Bonnevie as Master. Also located him in the 1875 census, but can't find out anything more. Any help would be appreciated! |

Thank you, I think there were two Christian Bonnevies -- an early Norwegian census list two, one a Christian Frederick, the other just Frederick. Louise and Christian are probably not the ones I'm looking for! I have so much on the Holte's side -- going back to the early 1700s -- and am aggravated I can't find anything on this side! For years we wondered if Bonnevie was just made up, but when I found his name on the ships register (with the right date) it seemed to fit. I'll try the British maritime sites also. |

The Christian Bonnevie listed in the 1881 UK census is most likely this one Click Here CHRISTIAN LAURENTIUS ZIMERMANN BONNEVIE Christening: 30 AUG 1833 Borgund, More Og Romsdal, Norway. The father was Hans Bonnevie Borgund was part of Aalsund Did Christian and Ida have any children in Norway? If so what were there names and dates of birth. Where did you locate Christian in the 1875 census? Carla |

Thank you for your good hints!
Ida Mathilde Olsen Holte had one son -- Otis Lynn -- with Christian Frederick Bonnevie. He was born in November of 1883 in Superior Wisconsin. When his father died, so the story goes, his maternal grandparents, Ole Benedict Olsen Holte and Beatha Olina Grorud, who had come to America in 1881 from Jahrsholte, Aurskog, Akershus, Norway to join their sons, adopted him.
I have more on the Holte line, but just can't get a handle on the right Bonnevie! It seems there were more than one sailor in this family, and definately more than one Christian! The Aurora is very hard to pin down also -- there must have been at least five Norwegian ships with this name over the years!
I've checked Bristish and Canadian records, but not the Maritime Museum in Wisconsin -- they only seem to do things in person, and I'm in Virginia! Any more ideas?
Thanks!!!!!!!! |
