I have a document which lists my great grandfathers name along with his birth date and some other norwegian text. The title reads "Bærnepligts og Lodtræfningøfeddel". Could someone translate this title for me. Also would someone be willing to translate two old documents for me. One is a conscription paper. I would like to get the instructions on the back translated.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi,
the problem is that you haven't translated all the Gothic characters correctly from the document.

I guess the first word reads Værnepligts, but I can't see what the last word would be... it must be some kind of ....seddel (not ...øfeddel)

If you use this Gothic alphabet, you might be able to transcribe the title correctly.

Værnepligt means compulsory military service, so it looks to be a military document. Maybe a proof of his general conscription, and that he is free to emigrate...? Those documents were called "Rodeseddel"...

Hello Ryan
If you can take a scan of it and send it to this address I will try to translate it.

I think maybe that it would be a Loddtrekningsseddel. (Some thing like a lottery ticket)

Hi,
yes, the title must read "Værnepligts- og lodtrækningseddel"

It can be translated into "Compulsory military service- and lottery ticket"

However, it's not an "ordinary" lottery ticket it the meaning that you could win prize money, the prize you "won" was that you had to do your military service...

Not every young man served in the army, in stead they drew a lottery, to pick the "lucky" ones...
