My great grandfathers name at birth was Olav Aslakson Doskje. This was on his birth and conscription papers. It also said he was born on Sollid u.Hauge in Kviteseid. So where does the Doskje fit in. I have read the data on naming practices and am still confused. If they are supposed to take the name of the farm.....why is it Doskje and not Sollid??
He may have lived at both of those locations. Have you thoroughly investigated the names of farms in the area of his birth and any later residences? The farm names where his family had earlier history? I always find it clearer to see that third 'name' as an address identifier which would change whenever a person moved. It is impossible to answer your question based on so little evidence. You'll need to do much more research into Olav Aslakson's life - from his birth to his final emigration from Norway, possibly even earlier family history.
When was your great grandfather born? There is one Aslak Andresson living on the cotter's farm Sollid (under the main farm Hauge with landnumber 77) in Kvitseid, Telemark in census 1900. He could be Olav's father. click here
Aslak is born in 1876, as is not married at the time of the census.
There are btw 9 persons names Olav Aslakson in the 1900 census for Kvitseid.
Hi there, Olav's fathers name was Aslak Olsen (Olavsen) born 1825. Olav was born on Aug 12, 1875 in Kviteseid. I have family lineage dating back to mid 1500's but no other names of Doskje show up. I am stumped and do not know where else to look. Any help would be much appreciated
