greetings from downunder - am trying to find info on a William Carl Hansen who married Agnes Gray 21/9/1882 Adelaide Australia - he, as family stories go, "jumped ship" in Adelaide - his naturalization papers give his homeland Fredrikstad, Oslo and birth about 1857 - father Hovel Hansen - children named as follows - Norman Hovel, Lilian Florabel, Ove Carl John, Henrietta Ann Katrine, William and of course my grandmother Hilda Ingaborg

Is there a list of mariners leaving Norway 1881/1882 or perhaps a register of all mariners in these years

HI
William Carl Hansen is probably not the name he went by in Norway. Norway uses the patronym naming system so if his fathers name was Hovel Hansen he would have had the last name of Hovelson although he could have taken the name Hansen or his father could have been Hans Hovelsen and someone assumed that he had to have the last name as William. I did not find any likely matches in the 1865 census. Have you gotten copies of all records in Australia that could give you more information, marriage and death certificates. Did the naturalization papers say when he came to Australia?
There are a couple of good articles on this site that could help. Click Here

Could this Karl Johan Haavaldsen be "your" William Carl Hansen ??

A lot of the same names looks to be "re-used", like Anne Chatrine, Ingebor Henriette, Karl...
