Hello !
I am looking for info about Karl Vilhelm Hansen born 27.12.85 in Trondheim. He arrived in Ellis Isl. in 1904, his destination was Pennsylvania were he got his Social security nr. 210-09-3722 under the name Carl Hansen, He passed away in 1964
in the state of Oregon.
I am also looking for his onkel Lorents Hansen born 27.04.1846, who left for USA in 1866,
And finally Even Larsen born 1835, married to Oleanne
Johnsdtr.
Any iformation about this persons and their families up to this very day will be most welcome.

You've obviously seen the entry for Carl in the US Social Security Death Index. That entry appears to list that he applied for a Social Security number while living in the state of Pennsylvania. The Social Security system was first initiated in 1935 - so you would probably expect that he must have been living in that state before that date.
The 1910 US census finds a Carl W.L. Steen in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, listed as 26 yrs old, married to New York born Ruby A. for 2 yrs, no children born yet. His occupation is listed as draftsman for an electrician or in the electrical field. This census lists his year of immigration as either 1904 or 1908.
Would your Karl Vilhelm Hansen have had any historical reason to possibly use the surname Steen? |

Odd, it would help if you could post Karl in the 1900 census and his moving out register, he most likely emigrated from Trondheim. Having this additional information would help find him on this side. Carl Hansen is a very common name and there are several possibilities in various census' for him and having more information would help in finding him.
Carl W. Hansen died on June 5, 1974 in Clatsop County, Washington, age 78 , certificate #7856. Securing his death certificate could yield additional information including next of kin. www.vitalrec.com
On the Ellis Island database I could not make the link work to the actual passenger list but in the passenger record indicates his name as Wilhelm, not Vilhelm, age 18, his place of residence was
Gr---jen. Do you know where that was? Who was his contact person in Pennsylvania?
While the Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935, actual registration was not begun until November 16, 1936 and many people were exempt, ie: farmers, self-employed and unemployed people. Actual benefits began on January 1, 1940. The social security number became our tax payer ID number in 1961 and that is when the current online computer database was begun and why the records do not go back before then. |

I have also seen his name at Ellis Isl. he arrived in 1904, 18 years of age. I also found his social securitynr. issued in
Pennsylvania so therefore I assume that he was there at least until 1936 as one of you correctly stated. He used the name
Carl Hansen. I do not know his contact in the usa, but I suspect that his uncle Lorents Hansen is that person.

Yes, I agree, he must have been in Pennsylvania at least until 1936. This Carl Steen can not be the correct person, when my " man " came to the USA he was Karl Vilhelm Hansen, maybe became Wilhelm at Ellis Isl. When he died in 1964 he was Carl Hansen, at least I think so.
Yes, I did find his Social Security Death Index and here it is.

Hello !
I have now found Carl Hansen in the draftlists for the 1. World War 1917/18, at the time he lived in Philadelpia, Pennsylvania.
This information I got at Ancestry, is there anyone that have entry that can look him up for me.
