Hello.

I've been researching my husbands family for nearly 4 years now, always going back to his great grandfather and hitting a brick wall. I recently found a family tree newly listed on Ancestry.com that includes info I've been looking for! Hooray!
I don't know who posted the family tree and so far I am unable to confirm all of the info listed.

According to the family tree posted:
Sjur Botolovsen Brekke b. 1825, Aurland Sogn, Norway
d. 1906, Aurland Sogn, Norway
Johanna Olsdatter Ytre Lie b 01 Jun 1827 Aurland Sogn Norway
d 25 Dec 1917 Sterling Twp WI USA

their children:
Ole Syvertsen Lee b. 20 Sep 1850, in Norway
d. 18 Dec 1903, Baldwin, WI USA
Jenny Lee
Lizzie Lee
Knute Lee

According to the 1900 US census, Ole immigrated to USA in 1869. But I cannot seem to locate this family on the 1865 Norwegian census or anywhere else (passenger lists, etc). I'd like to know more about the family.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

sha.

I found 1 Sjur Bottols. in the 1865 census the right age but the rest of the family doesn't seem to fit unless this is a second marriage. Click Here

Hi, I would believe that his is your Ole Sjurson born to unwed parents in 1849. Below that you will see Ole Sjurson immigrating to America in 1862 with his mother and her husband and family and with several women who could be sisters to Johanna Olsdatter Ytre Li Ramsøy.

There are ALOT of Brekkes from Aurland running around, it was a very large property with many sub-farms, the people are not necessarily related.. The ones I know settled in Minnesota, Goodhue and Ottertail County. This organization should be able to help you:

Hi,
I have the Aurland II ættebok (farm/family history).

Johanne Olsdtr Ytre Lie was born in 1827 at the Ytre Lie farm in Vangen Parish, Aurland Kommune. Her parents were Ole Olsen Stundal and Marta Johnsdtr Ytre Lie. Johanne had 5 siblings: Brita (b. 1828 - to US in 1860); Oline (b. 1831 - to US in 1860); Randi (b. 1834 - to US in 1862); Marta (b. 1836 - to US in 1862) and Mons ( 1816-1887, states he emigrated in 1860). Mons was a half-brother of Johanne, and the illegitimate son of Ivar Knutsen Ytre Lie and Marta Johnsdtr Ytre Lie.

Johanne Olsdtr married Mons Knutsen Ramsøy in 1855. They had a son Knut born in 1856 at Ramsøy (which is in the Nærøy Parish, Aurland Kommune). The family emigrated in 1862, according to the ættebok.

* Many who emigrated from the Ytre Lie farm, used "Lie" or "Lee" in America.
* Stundal is also spelled Stondal in Aurland

Your Ole's father, Sjur Botolfsen Brekke (1825-1906) was the son of Botolf Sjursen Brekke and Kari Eriksdatter Flåm.
Sjur had several siblings, a few dying young:
Erik 1828-1828
Eli 1828-1828
Ingeborg 1829-1834
Erik 1832-1832
Erik 1833-1892 or 1898 He went to the Berekvam farm and later emigrated in 1864. I believe he was married twice in the US: Martha Flom and a Mari Holum
Ellend 1836 Emigrated in 1866
Ingeborg 1838 Emigrated in 1858; I believe she went by "Isabel" and married Ole Oscar (Askelsen) Flom and lived in Steele County, MN
Nels 1841 He married and emigrated in 1869, according to the ættebok. (The History of Douglas and Grant Counties gives 1873). My own records show he was first in Holden Township, Goodhue County, MN, and later moved to Grant County, MN. His wife was Martha Pedersdtr Tærum. If you want Nels' biography from the history book, let me know and I'll e-mail it.

Sjur's parents, Bololf and Kari Brekke, emigrated in 1866. In the 1870 Holden Township census, the name is indexed under "Bottler Siveron!"

Sjur Botolfsen Brekke married in 1857 to Johanna Anfinsdtr Bjelde (1825-1910).
They had these children:
Botolf 1857-1904
Anfin 1860 to US in 1880
Erik 1862 to US in 1881
Ole 1864 to US in 1882
Sjur 1867-1933 He went to the Fretheim farm

* Botolv/Botolf; in many of the US censuses, this name is spelled "Butler."

Hope this helps!
Vickie
