My last name is Skaalid pronounced "Scully" I dont know much about it except that it wasn't my families real name when they lived in Norway. They had to change it to Skaalid when they moved to Canada. I think it was the name of my greatgrand parents farm in Norway. They came over to Canada in 1924. Thats all i know. Its hard for me to search for my ancestors in Norway if I dont know my families original surname. So if anyone has any information on anything I wrote I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you |

What were their first names and years of birth in Norway? Hopefully someone would have been born before the 1900 census and could be found in that database living on a farm similar to Skaalid. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/folketellinger_e.aspx There were a number of farms that had names starting with Skaali....

Thank you both, unfortunilty I am having trubble finding my way around the sites. My grandfather's name was Svein Skaalid, and was born in Telemark on January 21 1921. He was only 3 years old when he came over to Canada with his family. Thank you again |

That must be the right family. They live in 1900 census on Skaali, bruksnr 2, gardnr 76. You find the farm in the 1950 list of farm owner's Matrikkelutkastet
The main farm Brekke is on online map
It is very close to Morgedal Hotel
If you contact the Hotel you might get more information about Skaali. |

Hi, I happened on your posting and thought I'd try to help. First, Skaalid is an americanisation and/or "language reform" version of skålid. There is, indeed, a Skålid farm in Kviteseid, Vest Telemark. Some, but not all, search engines will find either version of the name. [If you want to do your own searching and In case you're not a computer language wonk, the character å is generated by holding alt and pressing 0229 on your number keypad.] Your first step might be to check out the website: kviteseid.kommune.no ... the website for the kviteseid "folk district. There's a link there to kviteseidbyen ....or "kviteseid town" for more info. Then check out the Bygdabok for Vest Telemark for your family name. Also check out Google Earth >satelite and input: kviteseid, Norway Good luck, Earl Dysthe
