My husband's great, great grandfather Niels Nielsen and great, great, great grandfather Christian (Kristian) Magnus Meyer were listed in census records as Skipper or ship masters.
Christian's son Henrik M. Meyer was a sailor (Matros).
Niels was born in Holbaek, Denmark, 1848.
Christian was born about 1816 in Bergen, Norway.
Henrik was born about about 1846 in Bergen, Norway.
Would greatly appreciate any advice and assistance. Thank you Tonia Nielsen |

What is it that you are trying to find out?
In the 1865 Norwegian census Kristian M. Meyer's large family is living in Fjell parish of Askøy clerical district, Hordaland, Norway.
Many of the birth/baptismal records for Kristian/Christian's children born in Bergen have been extracted to database format and are available on the Digitalarkivet website. For example, the database (Døypte i Bergen 1816-1894) indicates that Henrik was born 27 Oct 1847 and baptised 14 Nov 1847, records from Korskirken in Bergen. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=doep1816&gardpostnr=6448&sokefelt=skjul

Thank you for replying. I have copied and printed the pages from the 1865 for Kristian Magnus Meyer.
I have not learned how to use the baptismal records yet but i am working on that. Thank you for the address.
I was hoping i could find information about the ships they captained: merchant ships? size? cargos? Mainly i am wanting to learn as much as I can about the two men. It makes them come alive and teaches me so much more about Norway & Denmark. Just like I am slowly learning how to read certain phrases in both languages.
verbal family history says that Niels sold his ship before he came to America. The 1885 Denmark census stated that he was a ship master.
Thank you Tonia Nielsen |

OOPs. My husband said i have the number of greats wrong. There should only be one great with Niels Nielsen and two greats with Kristian Magnus Meyer.
Sorry Tonia Nielsen |

My problem is that i am not always patient. Thanks to you i did find the baptismal records for all of Christian Magnus Meyer's children.
Now i am working on marriage records. So far, i haven't found the marriage record i want in Bergen. So, as I told my husband, i am either using the wrong search pattern, the record is not on-line yet, or they did not get married in Bergen. But, that is a search to continue on another day.
If i am lucky and find something about their ships, i will come back and let you know.
Thank you again for responding to my posts.

Thank you for sharing the article. I have printed it and will use it as a guide. Since i know the birth town for both men, I will try and find the registers for them.
Cross your fingers for me.

I'm also so grateful that you pointed out that specific article and that you wrote it at all. I'll have to study it repeatedly, search in the LDS library catalog to learn what I can borrow on microfilm and then learn about where the newspapers may have been published and which have archives that still exist. My sailing ancestors were out of a small harbor town that was near a much larger city - so I think I'll start there. This is very exciting Borge - thank you again! |
