sorry if that seems like a dark question,
i was just wondering,
was their records kept of mental illness/sickness back then?
and have any of you ever traced something like that?

im guessing they really didnt do that sort of thing other then noting a cause of death or something, but all the same
im curious to know.
thanks.

You do not define the time frame. However, pre 1900 mental illnesses would usually be added as a remark in the censuses. There were no other records kept, but if they were supported by the community there might be notes in various county records about that. If people with mental illnesses were hospitalized there will be information in the hospital records.

They are not easy accessible. You still do not define the time frame, so I am not able to help with your last question, as the whereabouts and accessibility of those records are dependent on their age.
