Looking for four Ostby boys who came to usa in the late 1800's
their names are Nils Carl Raymond and Sigurd Ostbys. They came from Tellemarkem Norway. Nils was a harness maker and shoemaker. Any help with these people I would be ever so grateful. Thank you lalo@gondtc.com my name is Lorraine |

You haven't given much of any identifying information for the brothers, besides that they were born in Norway - probably in Telemark and appear to have lived on a farm by the common name of Østby (or a similar spelling). Several US census enumerations would give you at least a minimum of information that you should share, especially the vital information for each one of them like YEAR BORN, and WHEN IMMIGRATED TO US. You should check those items or other resources available to you. Did any US information also give information about what their father or mother's given names were? I was unable to even identify them in US census indexes - where did they live in the US? For instance I couldn't find ANY Norway born Nils, Carl, Raymond or Sigurd Ostby in 1900 US census index....

they are the son,s of Soren and Olive Nelson Ostby.
Nils was born 1-july-1859 died 9-nov-1945 in Douglas N Dak and Raymond died in Hankinson. N Dak Nils wife was Raghild Fuglum. She was born 1861 and died 1934. I'm working on slim pickings. |

Lorraine - You should be able to expand your base of information about the "Ostby boys" by doing much more research in North Dakota records. For example, in the 1920 US census there is a Norwegian born Nils Ostby, listed as 60 yrs old with sons named Sigurd, Peter, Edwin and Raymond (the sons born in North Dakota, except the oldest who was born in Minnesota). Check in Richland County, North Dakota. (I have no knowledge of where Douglas or Hankinson North Dakota are located - so that is little help.) In Richland County ND in the 1900 census index I believe Nils is listed as Nelson Ostby - then 10 children in the household - including Sigurd, Ole, Carl, Edwin and Peter (the sons all born in US).
I have a friend who is originally an Ostby from North Dakota. She is constantly singing the praises of the mounds of information available by Internet and/or by mail from North Dakota. I will ask her if she has any contacts there that are not well known or if they could all be found by you with reasonable searching. She has mentioned before that Ostby is a VERY common surname in North Dakota.

| I'm probably no help to you but a saw your posting, and was interested because my family is from Ostby (norde), but left in 1872. I'm trying to find why they sold their farm. |

| Interesting how much things have changed in the last twenty years in genealogy. Today there are 104 Family Trees on Nils Sorenson Ostby on Ancestry.com alone. One can find birth years, death years, and photos of several of the Ostby boys. The family can be followed back to Norway at least two generations and probably further with a little effort. |
