I am seeking information on Alf Teodor Johansen. His surname was formerly Teodorsen from Trasidingen. He served in the Merchant Marine and during the war, his boat was rescued and all the crew were brought to New York where he remained until the war ended. He returned to Norway to re-join his wife Karen (or Karin) Helene Syversen Julsen and daughter Maybrett. They emmigrated to the US via Canada (Quebec I believe) in the mid to late 1940's in a group of 12 on the Idefjord. Alf T. Johansen's father was Johan Teodorsen (was Domberg), and mother Marie Severina Sorensen. It it most difficult to find anything on Alf and his parents. Any help would be most appreciated!! Thank you.

Have you checked out this site about the Norwegian Merchant Marines and World War II:

http://warsailors.com/

Where is Trasidingen in Norway, only come up with it in Switzerland?

Sorry... I am looking up both sides of the family and put the wrong place down... Alf T. (Teodorsen) Johansen is from Fredrikstad - Krakeroy. He was born May 22, 1905 or there-abouts.

I have previously (several times) checked out the Norwegian Merchant Marines and World War II website and am no further ahead. It shows an Alf Johansen sailor that perished at sea, but none other by that name. Thanks.

WoW! This is GREAT! Thank you so much! By the way...How in the world do I use the Digitalarkivet?? I've tried so many times and just do not come up with desired results! When clicking the English link at the bottom of the page, instead of getting the same information in English, it rolls over to another page.

Thanks again...

In the scant records I have, Alf T. Johansen's grandmother is thought to be Karen Bolette Trondsen and father - Anton Sorensen- and in the link posted, it is Karen Bolette Sorensen, and Anders Sorensen. I have tried (in vain) to find the other names with the proper connections and it is liternally like finding a needle in haystack. How do I do it?

Hi,
Karen Bolette has probably her lastname Sørensen from her husband in the census. She could very well be a "Trondsen or Trondsdatter".

The census says Anders Sørensen, but it could of course be Anton, there are errors in the database...

The "error factor" is quite true. Thanks for reminding me of that.
