August Martin Nilsson/Nilson aka Martin Nelson born in Alolf Fredrik Parish, Stockholm on 1874-03-30 left Sweden in 1894.
He traveled across Sweden to reach Norway to emigrate to the US arriving on 1894-11-05.
I am trying to find the ship name and the port he left from.
Regards, Jane Nelson |

How do you know the exact date he arrived? Is it May 11 or November 5? |

I am sorry I omitted that. The source of the date November 5, 1894 is from his naturalization papers which are recorded in Suffolk County Court House, Boston, Massachusetts. He was naturalized in 1908. |

If you look at the Index of Departures and the Arrivals on this site, very few ships went directly from Norway to North America. He may have arrived at the Port of New York and you can search for him on the free Ellis Island website:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/
You should try to find him in the emigrant police protocols on Digitalarkivet, if he left from a Norwegian port, he should be registered there. It most likely would give the name of the shipping company and then you could figure what shipping routes and ports they traveled to.

He may very well have traveled to Canada, you can rent the Canadian passenger lists at a local Family History Center.
There is another possibility that the date he gave on the Naturalization application is incorrect. This happened to me with my great grandfathers record, he gave the correct month and day but the wrong year. Sometimes the naturalization papers give the port of arrival, do you have both the original application and the final papers?
I could not find him in the online records I have access to, including Boston, and I checked under August and under Martin. |

I appreciate your help and suggestions. I will certainly do more research.
Heresay information is that he arrived in NY. I have searched the Ellis Island website and Ancestry.com (as a member) and he is not listed with the information about him that I have. I searched other spellings of his name and other dates to no avail.
Thank you, Jane |
