My ancestor, Mikkel Haugerud (and family) left Christinia on April 15, 1870 on the Oder headed for Hull or London. According to this web site, the agent of Wilson line would be H. Heitman & Son. Is it possible to determine which ship and line would be most likely from Liverpool or London? I assume the trip from Norway to USA took about 2 weeks. I have not found him in NY micofilm of arriving vessels. Thanks. Jon |

The information about the Wilson Line agent does not help in this case. The reason is that this was, as you know, only the feeder ship. Unfortunately, the name of the agent was omitted when they transcribed the police registers, therefore you have to get the original, or film, to find out who the agent of the transatlantic line was.

Børge, You responded to my post: "Most likely ship after Oder" and said the agent's name was needed from the original film. I now have that. It was O.Svenson Hope that helps. Thanks. Jon |

O. Svenson was the agent of the National Line.
He was authorized to convey emigrants on the National Line via Copenhagen and Kristiansand. By steamship to Hull, railway to Liverpool and from there to New York. Your Mikkel traveled via Liverpool. Here is a little more info about the line:

Børge, Thanks for identifying the National Line, from agent O. Svenson. I read the info on the N. line on your web site and also on TheShipsList. There were about 25 ships on the National Line and I have narrowed down the list to 10, for the time period of 1870. I have checked the Magellan site and the Transcribers Guild and have not had any luck on narrowing the list of 10 down to arrival time periods in the U.S. The closest I have come is the ship Holland (formerly Louisiana), which according to Ted Finch was rebuilt in 1870 and put back into service from Liverpool on April 20, 1870, which is 5 days after my ancestor left Norway. Do you have any ideas on which ship it might be? Thanks. Jon |

It is really impossible to say for sure, you just have to get the right film, check for the arrivals by any of the 10 ships, expect an arrival 3-4 weeks after the departure from Norway.
