Hello,

Can anyone tell me where I might look or help me find information on Mikkel Johansson Grondahl born 16 dec 1833 in Stange Norway.
He married Marte Mortensdatter. I have been trying to find who his parents are , or brothers and sisters.

Also Halvor Erikson Grundahl. Born 26, Aug 1853 Trysil Norway
He Married Mikkels Daughter Marte Grundahl. They were married in Trysil in 1878 Before imigrating to the Us. I would like to find his parents and siblings as well.

I seem to have hit a wall. Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

This is a possibility -
Stange, Hedmark
16 Dec 1833 Michel * born out of wedlock to
Marthe Jensdatter Gyrudeie and Johannes Monsen Torsildeie

Could this be his marriage ? 21 March 1834
Johannes Monsen Tomteeie 23 - father , Mons Johansen
Olava Johannesdatter Togstad 28 - father, Johannes Larsen Thomleeie of Land

A good place to research Stange and Trysil is the Solørlag Stevne, for the Hedmark area, which will be held in Fargo, ND in Sept.

Well, nobody said this stuff was easy. We all had to learn how to use the search engines and most of us do not read Norwegian. I like using Digitalarkivet and they have a help section to help you learn how to successfully search the website.

Here is Mikkel, siblings and his widowed father Johannes in the 1865 census on the Gunderud farm:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=f60417&gardpostnr=193&personpostnr=1284&merk=1284#ovre

Since Johannes was 66 in the 1865 census, this could be him in the 1801 census in Stange, age 1 year:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=16&filnamn=f10417&gardpostnr=199&personpostnr=3319&merk=3319#ovre

When I print these records out, I "hide search field" and print in landscape (always several copies to make notes on!).

The Stange records have been microfilmed and are available to rental at a local Family History Center:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitydetails&subject=145380&subject_disp=Norway%2C+Hedmark%2C+Stange&columns=*,0,0

The later Stange parish records are available online if you want to research relatives who stayed in Norway:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_fylke=4&idx_kilde=Alle&idx_periode=&idx_textsearch=&js=j

There is no 1875 census online for Stange. Here is the Gunnderud farm in the 1900 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=f00417&gardpostnr=233&merk=233#ovre

Here is the Norwegian dictionary I like to use to read old records:

http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

The bydelag for Nord-Hedmarken is having a stevne on August 2-5 in Eau Claire, WI. They should be a big help to you in finding information. The more information you have when you go the better results you will find.

http://www.nhohlag.org/

As far as finding information on people, you must have to keep looking and collect all the bits and pieces and organize them together to arrive at the correct information. There is no magic bullet, it is like a detective story. I have been doing this for over 30 years and still have not found everything but it sure is fun looking.
