I'm currently working on a book about men from the parishes Strand, Forsand, Årdal, Fister and Hjelmeland who fought in the US Civil War. I lost all my original data a year ago, so it's back to the fact-finding phase again. I've concentrated on emigrants born between 1811 and 1847 (oldest being 50 y.o. in 1861, the youngest 18 y.o. in 1865).
So far I have 618 individuals on my list. 84 are identified as having fought in the war, but I still lack 21 of these in regard to units and other specifics on their service (Being listed as war pensioners, listed with Ulvestad as Civil War vets etc.).
So to get a bit further on this project: If anyone has anything whatsoever on emigrants from this area, having emigrated before 1865 that is, I'd greatly appriciate any info. This goes to both veterans and non-veterans, as I also need to sort them out, all of them.
And in closing: The plan was originally to cover all of Ryfylke, but it's too much for one book. So I have plans for two more some time in the future. This one will cover "Ytre Ryfylke". The second will cover the islands, i.e Rennesøy, Finnøy and Stjernarøy. The third will cover "Indre Ryfylke", i.e. Erfjord, Jelsa, Sand, Suldal, Vikedal, Vindafjord, Nedstrand and Tysvær. Finally, I might start on Etne and Skånevik, but that's in a distant future for sure. But info on any pre-1865 emigrants from any of these parishes will also be greatly appriciated, as I've already done some basic fact-finding on all these areas along the way.

You probably know of this site. If not, you will find several hundred Norwegian Civil War soldiers listed along with biographical data, Norwegian place of origin and, often, portraits. <http://www.15thwisconsin.net/> Jim Heg |

Yes, Colonel Heg was my G-Grandfather. This site has been most helpful in tracing my Norwegian roots - way back to Ostfold, and at least five generations. Jim heg |

Thanks both for the helpful tips. I've used the site for the 15th Wisconsin on several occations. The two longest surviving prisoners of Andersonville, Osmund Tvedt and Ole Steensland, were both from the area in question, as well as Johannes Tysdahl of Company E. I also have a couple of possibles that I need to check more thoroughly before adding them to any list.
And I'm also familiar with Col. Heg, both through my research, and because my service with the Norwegian National Guards includes a few years in Lier.
Best regards, Stein |

I don't know if you have tried but the website for the vesterheim museum has a listing on the Norwegians in the civil war. http://vesterheim.org/CivilWar/index.html You might want to try it. Amy |

Thanks for the tip. I've been there and even added a couple of corrections to the database. When the project has come to an end, I'll send an English version of the whole thing to them, as well. As for the status: I now have 91 vets from Ytre Ryfylke, whereof 65 have been identified with regards to unit etc. Progress is slow, but I'll hopefully get there eventually. As for Indre Ryfylke, I have come across 16 vets, and from Ryfylkeøyane, I have 20. But bear in mind that I haven't started any systematic searches for the two latter areas yet.
Best regards, Stein |

My great great grandfather John Johnson fought in the Civil War. He emigrated from Norway in May 1850 with other members of his family. He enlisted from Two Creeks, Wisconsin. He was 22 when he came to the U.S., so he was born in 1828. When he came over his name on the passenger list (Ebenezer, May 1850) was John Halvorsson. He subsequently changed his name to John Johnson after arriving in Wisconsin.I believe he came from a place called Haeggebostad Pastorate. I haven't gone back any further in my genealogy research so I don't know where exactly Haeggebostad Pastorate is. I do have other information on him, including Civil War records and a photo, which I would be happy to share if you are interested. I also have a copy of the passport his father (Halvor Johanneson) acquired from the local police department in order for the family to emmigrate to the U.S.

If you need information on Halvor O. Brenden, I can provide you with what I know. Halvor was born 21 Mar 1835 in Sor Aardal and served under Col. Heg in Co. E of the 15th Wisconsin. He emigrated to Wisconsin about 1857. I do have his discharge papers and a photo of him. You can also find him under <http://www.15thwisconsin.net and also under the website Amy wrote above. Let me know if I can help you more. Gene (docbgood)

My Norwegian great great grandfather was A.O. (Anton Olaf) Kruge from Larvik, born in 1830 and died in Marquette, Michigan in 1921. He was a U.S. Naval officer (Acting Ensign), aboard the U.S.S. Shokokon, Peterhoff and Annemone (Captain). He enter the U.S.Navy in November 1863 and was honorably discharged in December of 1865. I have pictures of him in GAR uniform at the veterans home in Marquette along with Teddy Roosevelt and other veterans. In 1898 Anton was the Marshall of the parade for coming home of the Cuban Soldiers in Chicago. He died at the Vets home in 1921. I hope that this helps you. If you have further questions I would be happy to try to assist. I am trying to locate information on Anton as well as his wife Beatta Hoff from Larvik area, and their son in law (my great grandfather) Christian Sabey from Bergen, but am having very little luck. Beatta, her daughter (my great grandmother) and Christian all died in Chicago. Sincerely,

Byron - Kåre already gave you this information about the Kruge family in the other thread that you posted in here. I'll duplicate his information.
Anton appears in the 1865 Norwegian census living in Larvik district of Vestfold, Norway. That census appears to state that he did spend about 3 years in the US (or something like that). http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0707&kenr=000&bnr=0033&lnr=00
That census tells you that Anton was born in Tønsberg, (also in Vestfold) and that he was born about 1828. The parish birth/baptismal records for Tønsberg are available for your research online
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.
The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage. The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage. After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English. Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].
Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Stein:
I am trying to get started on the forum again after 3 years. Anton Olaf Kruge was an acting Ensign in the U.S. Navy from 1863 to the end of the Civil War and saw action in the Blockade. He was on several ships during that period. He was captain of his last ship. Some of the ships were the USS Annemone, the USS Peterhoff. I will have to research more to give you further information. He was born in Tonsberg, Norway outside of Oslo (Christiana) in 1830.

RE: John Brown. I am looking for what his name might have been when he lived in Norway. He immigrated to United States in 1854. I have no idea what is name would have been, and no way to figure it out. I also don't know where he lived. |
