Were the passenger ships of 1865 wind powered or steam powered - or maybe a combination of both - Could the same vessel that came from Northern Norway navigate through the St. Lawrence River-also how did they negotiate Niagara Falls during those years - Looking at a map - the most logial route from Norway to America would be through the St. Lawrence- jams@lakedalelink.net James A. All of the ships going directly from Norway in 1865 were sailing ships. However, "Small" steamers sailed as feeders to Britain with passengers for the oceangoing steamships from England. Saying that, I must add, that only a very small percentage of the emigrants leaving from Norway in 1865 traveled via Britain (or Germany) to cross the ocean on steamships.
