Mathias was born in Pulkkila Finland on December 2, 1835 - at the age of 18 he immigrated to Vadso Norway where it was rumored everyone ate fat fish and had $$$ jingling in their pockets - he left Vadso for America after working several years for a Norwegian merchant named Mr. Petersson who owned a hardware store there - James Saari
