In the 1900 census Osten P(Petersen?) Golberg is listed as born December 1821. In the LDS there is Osten Pedersen born Dec 20 1821 Click Here parents Peder Aslaksen and Astri Tidemandsdatter. In the 1801 census for Nes Buskerud Norway there is a Peder Aslachsen living on the farm Golberg Click Here A pretty good chance that he is the father of Osten.

My sincere thanks to everyone - I am simply overwhelmed that everyone has been so very helpful. I thought that tracing Scottish heritage was difficult enough but it's childplay compared with tracing Norwegian emigration! It's now starting to make sense...especially now I know that the names are farm names rather than family names. I was always puzzled why the family had changed from Pedersen to Goelberg and then Golberg but now I see that the family farm was actually Golberg! It's simply fascinating and I am going to pass everything along to my husband when he returns in a couple of days. In the meantime my mother in law will be fascinated to hear about the Golbergs... Once again many many thanks.. |

I am absolutely astounded that several forum members were able to retrieve so much information...and so quickly. Can you share some of your secrets with a novice? I'm happy to subscribe to some of the family history sources... can you recommend some good ones? PS I spoke with my husband on the phone and he told me that he had shared all the information with his mother.. She came on the phone and I have never heard a 98 year old so very excited....she was simply over the moon! It's given her a new lease on life and we have promised to send her copies of all the information that everyone supplied over the past couple of days...So thank you from the bottom of our hearts! |

Thanks Hopkins for those very useful links. I wonder whether I could ask one last favour of Carla? Carla you mentioned that the 1900 US census mentions an Osten P. Golberg. I have tried to trace this without success but I'm wondering whether you would mind checking what year he arrived in the US? ( I understand that information is given in the census). I can then check back and see what possible ships he might have come on....I've searched through a lot of ship lists but it is a disheartening task and having the date should make things much easier. Many thanks! |

Thanks Carla... now I can check the list of ships for that year (although I do recognize that we may not be successful given that not all passengers are listed). Just one clarification...you said Peter ...just to confirm that it's Osten P (Pedersen?) and Margaret that we're talking about? Osten would have been about 80 at the time of the 1900 census. He had a son Peter who would have been born around 1860. Thanks for all your help! |

From Ancestry.com:
Name: Osten P Golberg, birth: abt 1822 Spouse: Margaret, birth: abt 1828 Residence: <city>, Winneshiek, Iowa 1900 United States Federal Census
So her post should read Osten & Margaret, not Peter & Margaret...
Note: There has been some confusion about the year of birth of Østen Pedersen Golberg. Correct date according to Nes churchbook is 20-dec-1820.

There could certainly be a link. What I have from the 1880 Census (all Bolland) is Ole - 20, Betsey 19, Gertie, 17 and John (14)...that must be the John whom Tron mentioned. Ole married Kaaren (we don't have surname). They had a daughter Louise and sadly when Louise was 2 her mother died in childbirth. Ole died 5 years later around 1887. Louise married Oscar Oliver Goelberg (sometimes Golberg) and they came to Saskatchewan, Canada to pioneer in the early 1900's. They are my husband's maternal grandparents. Because of changes in name (and in Norway Goelberg was Peterson!) it really is difficult!
My friend Claudette's Father was CLAUDE BERTRAM GOLBERG, Mother HAZEL SMITH. CLAUDE'S Father was OSCAR OLIVER GOELBERG, Mother LOUISE KRISTIANNE BOLLAND |

My paternal grandparents were Oscar and Louise Golberg. I too had some difficulty with the research of the names. My father's name was Oliver Peter Golberg, one of seven children born to Oscar and Louise. Apparently Oscar and Louise settled in Wilkie Sask in 1906, from Hesper Iowa. There are still 2 children remaining...Howard in Edmonton and Nina in Regina. I do have a family tree that has not been updated for some time. It goes back as far as Austin Peter Goelberg. It is interesting following what you have done on the forum. I see you're husband has his mother living in Sask. What is her name, if you don't mind me asking? Thank you, look forward to you're reply.
