I am looking for help - My Great Great Grandfather's obit is difficult to read. He was born Nov. 1842 in A??en Bosekof, West Finmarken Norway is what the obit says. He came to the US in 1868. I am unclear where A??en etc. Norway is situated to begin searching. The funeral home book lists his parents as Simon Simonson and his mother Marguerite Isaacson both from Norway. My Great Great Grandmother was Mary/Marie Romstahl (possibly Larsdatter???)- obit says born in Romstahl? would that be Romsdal instead??? She was born Dec. 19th, 1842...not sure yet in Us? or Norway I would greatly appreciate any advice/suggestions. Thank you KIm Nelson |

I did find some simensen's in the 1865 census for Altens Finmark, Bosskop local parish, but none matching anyone listed. In the 1900 census is does say that Mike "Simondson" immigrated in 1865 which would explain why he wouldn't be in the 1865 census. It also says his father was from Finland.

Kim - Is that Mike Simondson's older brother Ole listed on that same 1900 US census page? If yes, then it does appear to verify the original location of Alten in Finnmark. (follow my logic here...) Ole Simondson born June 1840 in Norway indicates immigration year of 1868, wife named Katrina? born 1842 Finland? oldest child still living at home was born in Michigan. (1900 US census) In emigration register for port of Trondheim, Norway for year 1868 - Ole Simons. Reipas, 'Catarine' and a number of children from Alten [Finnmark] -- ages for Ole and 'Catarine' are very good matches to census info from US. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=37&filnamn=EMITROND&gardpostnr=2648&sokefelt=skjul
Now, what might 'Reipas' indicate? first thought, possibly a farm name in Alten. Check 1865 Norwegian census and find - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=43&filnamn=f62012&gardpostnr=136&sokefelt=skjul http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=36&filnamn=f62012&gardpostnr=50&sokefelt=skjul
The1865 Norwegian census shows a farm called 'Reipas-Grube' in Alten but Ole's family live on Bjørkesletten farm in Alten, Finnmark,Norway. His parents were possibly Simen Olsen and Grethe Mikkelsdatter, making the naming of a son Mikkel (not present) VERY logical. (But that relationship is NOT specified in the census.)
So that obituary or funeral home record very likely contains some wrong information (you'll have to verify in primary source records) but at least it pointed you to Alten district of Finnmark, Norway. Always start with all of the more recent documents and work your way earlier following the clues you can glean! collecting sibling information as possible can often save you from what appears to be a 'brick wall'. Did these 'Simonson' brothers survive for the 1925 Iowa state census? Check parents names in that.
You'll find Michael and Ole Simonson in Houghton Co. Michigan for the1880 US census. More family members listed there - did they change their names or just give little care to answers to a census taker? You'll have an interesting time being detective to find that out.

By the way, that Risvold family that are next door neighbors in 1900 and later marry into the Mike Simonson family (see 1910 and 1920 US censuses) is most likely from Sauda, Rogaland, Norway. (Like Chelsvig, Risvold is one of those Norwegian names that I always notice.) |

Thank you... how do you get into the 1925 Iowa census? I haven't found a "free" spot yet. Probably go to LDS center right? Lots of great leads with your detective work. I had never heard of those farms before. I will search more into my Great Grandparents history also..thanks so much for all the leads and hints..greatly appreciated.. I didn't know where to go- I was really clueless. Main reason why I hadn't even started this family because I didn't know where to begin. Have a happy holiday season- both of you!!!! thanks again for your kindness in helping me. Kim N |

"Probably go to LDS center right?" You got it!! Or check with the Iowa Historical Library in Des Moines - they've got LOTS of stuff too. (Parking was awful.) I've seen a couple of IA counties where someone has extracted that census information to an online database - but never one of the counties that I need.
Iowa did state censuses in 1885,1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925. The 1925 is a great one that recorded lots of interesting information. The others far less interesting. |

kmn24 - Peder and Tena Sexe are my maternal great great grandparents. My great grandparents are Hans and Gunilde (Julia) Mellgren. My grandmother is Helen (Helena) (Mellgren) Berry. You must be approximately the age of my mother, Charlotte (Berry) Busch. |
