I am trying to find out the geanology. He farmed on my grandfather's place. He raised a number of children; his wife died in childbirth as his last child was born, Margarethe, was born. My grandfather bought what was his land in 1911. |

Dear Wally, Because there are a lot of other people with Bertinus Erdahl's name, you will have to give this forum some more information.
In order to be somewhat efficient, and search the available records of people, using a computer, please share all the information that you have on Bert.
Do you have a birthdate? Where was he born? If Norway, please provide some info. Did Bert have brothers and sisters? What was his parents names? When did he immigrate to the US? Where did he live in the US? When did he die?
Are you just looking for his Norway heritage?

Hopkins, You are quite correct. The daughter who was born--where his wife died--went on to write 2 novels, "The Coffee Train" and "Call Back the Years". If my information is correct Bertinus died and is burried in Wells County, North Dakota. |

That man was born in Wisconsin. What do you hope to find from Norwegian emigration?
There is a large family history/tree for him on World Family Tree CDs (the series sold by the same company that does Family Tree Maker software.). Be careful though - whoever created it didn't know much about Norway or Norwegians. I doubt that much was carefully verified in it - but you should be able to clean it up to get accurate information. |

Hopkins, Basically I am wondering why that wave of Norweigens settled in Wisconson. My grandmother and her family headed for Albert Lea with the final destination being Winnebago County, Iowa. |

There is one Bertinus Erdal (7), in Christiana, Dane Co, Wisconsin for census-1880. Parents are N. M. Erdal & Brita Erdal, née Berge. I believe the family is from Voss, Hordaland.
Brother Mikal (21) is born in Wisconsin ab. 1859, so the parents must have emigrated before that time, probably from Bergen, Hordaland. Widow Maria Berge (86) could be Brita Erdal's mother.

Why? Well huge numbers of the very early Norwegian emigrants first settled in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Why? for a 'better life' and the economic opportunities available, for the available land, for religious freedom, to be with other Norwegians who emigrated, etc. etc. etc. Possbily as many different reasons as their were emigrants. You'll remember that the settlement of the United States by emigrants started in the east and gradually moved westward -- so did the Norwegians. When the "Erdahl" family arrived in Wisconsin - Iowa was still unsettled, basically only Indian territory. The Norwegian American Historical Association has an entire library of books and many of them discuss 'why'. Their collection is written by the emigrants themselves, their children or by academics who have made that subject their field of study.
That 1880 Dane Co. census finding is exactly correct. I think Bertinius' parents came from area in northern Hardanger, very close to Voss. Probably Eidfjord, Ulvik districts. But no matter about them - that isn't going to tell Wally "WHY".

The family also lived in Christiana, Dane Co, Wisconsin in 1860:
Nicolus Erdahl (31) Betsey Erdahl (30) Mikkel Erdahl (1)
Also in the household: Gullick Erdahl (19) Sarah Erdahl (29) Rachael Erdahl (26)
So parents to Bertinus would be Nicolus & Betsey Erdahl.
This is most likely Nicolus Erdahl (Bertinus' father):
Nicolaus Mikkelsen Birth: 03 Aug 1828, Ulvik, Hordaland Christening: 04 Aug 1828, Ulvik, Hordaland Parents: Mikkel Gulleksen & Torbjor Nicolausdr
From Ulvik, Hordaland...
... and could this be Bertinius's mother?
Britha Brynildsen Birth: 07 OCT 1830 Christening: 17 OCT 1830, Voss, Hordaland Parents: Brynild Johannessen & Mari Gulleiksdr
The age for Mari Gulleiksdr fits with widow Maria Berge in census-1880 for Wisconsin. Here is Mari Gullichsdatter on the Sove farm in Voss, Hordaland, census-1801.
She married married Brynild Johannesen on 10 JUN 1828, Voss, Hordaland. If you could connect these people to the Berge farm in Voss, that would be the final proof...
Martha Bringelson (38) in census-1880 could be Britha's sister Marthe Brynildsen, born 1838, although the birthyear doesn't fit exactly.
About the "WHY"... here is a history about early Norwegian Settlements in Wisconsin.

One Nicholis Erdhat (22) from Norway can be found in Lake Mills, Jefferson, Wisconsin in census-1850.
Could it be Nicolaus Mikkelsen Erdahl, ie. Bertinus's father?

Nikolai Mikkelsen Erdahl was b. 3 August 1828, died Deerfield, Wi. 3 August 1896. Married July 1858 to Brita Berge, b. 1831. Children Mikkel b 18 April 1859 and Bertinius b. 1873.
The family immigrated 1847 Source: Norwegian Immigrants to the US Vol 3 p46 by Gerhard Naeseth
Nikolai's parents were Mikkel Gulliksen Erdahl (named for farm in Eidfjord) but he was from Kinsarvik. His parents were Gulleik Johnson Busnes and Sigrid Mikkelsdtr. Bu.
More details are in this book which you should be able to get through interlibrary loan.
They can also be found in Gards og Ættesoge for Eidfjord p68 by Tobias and Agnes Lægreid
Torbjorg Niklasdtr. Erdal b. 1805 was the daughter of Niklas Sveinson Erdal and Ragna Torfinnsdtr. Bu.(Eidfjord)
There are several generations going back in the Eidfjord book.

Which proves the findings above.
It can only be Nicolaus Mikkelsen Erdahl who emigrated in 1847 then, and he must be "Nicholas Erdhal" (22), living in Lake Mills, Jefferson, Wisconsin in census-1850.
His wife Britha Brynildsen Berge is born 07 OCT 1830, and emigrated on April 14th. 1857.
Marriage possibly in Lake Mills, Jefferson or Christiana, Dane (July 1858).

Nikolai Mikkelsen Erdahl's sister, Anngunna Mikkelsdtr. Erdahl, was married to Johannes Brynjulvsen Berge who is the brother of Britha Brynjulvsdtr. (Brynhildsdtr.) acc. to Historie om Udvandringen fra Voss by K.A. Rene p439-440.
This fact was also mentioned in the Naeseth book. In the Rene book, Angunna is called Angelina. http://www.vosselag.org/renebooksales.html
