You have to start a family history by beginning with every little piece of information you can gather in the US about Ole and Gunhild Amundson. WHEN they were each born, WHERE they were each born, names of other older members of their family (especially their parents and siblings if possible), WHEN they came to the US, etc. With those pieces of information you can start learning about the records available for your research in the correct time period and location in Norway.

Hi Deb,
I see you have two going...
Here is the bride's last name starting with Jod at the Grand Forks County Marriage record database:
Amundson, Ole Jodock, Gunhild N Wedding Date: 1907-01-12 License No.: 10-240 Box: 4 Folder: 42 Gjerde, Samuel B Jodock, Olive N Wedding Date: 1902-01-11 License No.: 6-409 Box: 3 Folder: 18 Gunhild is mentioned in the Grand Forks County Heritage Book A History of Rural Grand Forks County(published in 1976 by the Grand Forks County Heritage Book Committee)on pages 146-147 in both the story about her parents Nils and Liv Jodock as well as the story about her brother Tollef (Tom.) In this book there are stories about John Jodock, Arnold Jodock, Nels Jodock as well as Nils and Tom already mentioned. There is also a reproduction of a photo of the Nils & Liv Jodock family with them dressed in their bunads (national costume).
Gunhild took a homestead in Williams County, North Dakota in 1907. If you search land patents in North Dakota for Jodock you will find and can download a copy of the final patent at:
www.glorecords.blm.gov
Gunhild died on 4 May 1972 in Grand Forks County and is buried in the Northwood, North Dakota cemetery.
A book titled "The Family Tree of Nils Huso Jodock" was compiled by Erling and Carol Jodock in 1984-1985. On the other post you started I mentioned that the Jodocks came from Hemsedal, Hallingdal, Norway.
Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your project.

Ole Amundson & Gunhild N Jodock from Jackie's message above is the correct marriage. Wedding Date: 1907-01-12, Grand Forks County.
Census 1910 for Williams county, North Dakota: Ole Amundson, b 1877, Immigration Year 1888 Gunhild Amundson, b 1879, No Immigration Year Arthur N Amundson, b 1908 Census 1920 for Williams county, North Dakota: Ole Amundson, b 1877, Immigration Year 1888 Gunital Amundson, b 1879, Immigration Year 1888 Arthur N Amundson, b 1908 George A Amundson, b 1915 Ida L Amundson, b 1918 Lenard Amundson, b 1911 Mildred Amundson, b 1916 Census 1930 for Williams county, North Dakota: Ole Amundson, b 1877, born Norway Lrenild Amundson, b 1878 Arthur Amundson, b 1908 Lseznard Amundson, b 1911 George Amundson, b 1914 Mildred Amundson, b 1917 Ida Amundson, b 1919 Martin Amundson, b 1921
Immigration year looks to be 1888 for Ole. He would then have been about 11 yrs old, so chances are that he emigrated with his parents.

Hi Deb,
The Wonder of Williams A History of Williams County, North Dakota Volume 2 on page 1326 has a story titled "Ole Amundson Family" It's really short but does say: "Ole Amundson came from Voss, Norway..."
Hopefully, this is enough of a description where he came from to track down his parents etc.
Good Luck.
Jackie M.

I wonder if the Jodock name is coming from Oles wife Gunhild, fathers first name in Norway unknown.
I have seen following emigrants from farm Jodock in Hemsedal; Anne A. Jodock age 20 em. 1883, Margit A. Jodock age 20 em. 1886, Jon Nielsen Jodock b. 1868 em. 1888, Ole Nilsen Jodock b. 1871 em 1890, Tellef Nilsen Jodock b. 1873 and Oline Nilsdatter Jodock b. 1875 both emigrated in1896. Margit A. Jodock age 28 moved to Nord Aurdal in 1884
Anne A. Jodock emigrated 1883 with 10 people from Halbjĝrshus. Acc. the census for Hemsedal it was the Halbjĝrshus family who owend Jodock in 1900.

Hi Kċre,
Yes Jodock is the wife Gunhild's surname in America. Her parents are Nils and Liv who also came to America with Gunhild in 1900. They did come from Hemsedal. Tellef used Tom as his first name in America, John is also a brother as is Ole, Syver. The "Olive Jodock" also in the Grand Forks marriage records is actually Oline and is also a sister to Gunhild. Nils 19271827-1900 was actually married twice first to Anne Holen 1826-1854 and second to Liv Olsdatter 1835-1920. Liv is recorded in the North Dakota death index online as "Leo N Jodock, female" as dying in Williams county on 22 Mar 1920.
When Gunhild married Ole Amundson, they used Amundson as their family surname. Ole Amundson, according to the census information provided earlier was born about 1877 (probably at Voss) came to U.S. about 1888. There is an Ole Amundson age 22 born 1876 Voss leaving from Bergen on the Cunard line in 1898 in the Digitalarkivet site which might be him, if the census record is off a bit and the birth date is off a bit. There is also an Ole Amundson in the naturalization records database of North Dakota who filed first papers in 1909 and 2 nd papers in 1915 in Williams County. This might be him or another Ole Amundson (1858-1933)buried in Williams county. There are several Ole Amundsons in the North Dakota death index online but none with a birthyear of 1877 or 1876.

You are right, Gunhild Larsen Jodock age 22 left Oslo June 15. 1900 in company with two brothers Ole age 29, Sigurd age 15 and the parents Nils Johansen Jodock age 73 and Liv Jodock age 65 on ship Montebello, dest N. Dakota. Ole age 29 emigrated earlier and returned for his family since he already was a US citizen.
Where to look for Ole Amundsen born 1877? Voss was mentioned, I found Ole Ommundsen born in Voss on March 24. 1877 on Eggeneie born to Ommund Sjursen and Anna Hansdatter. Hmm??

Hi,
If Ole Amundson can be found in the 1900 US census, that record should list his month and year of birth and should also list year date of migration to US.
Or finding Ole Amundson in the World War I draft registration cards which source usually contains a birthdate.
Or perhaps there are "family records" which might have the birthdate for Ole to compare to the Voss information.
Any such findings would support the Ole Amundson you have found in the Voss records.
Then in Hallingen published Dec 1939 in an article by Ingebret Sevre titled "Ole Nilsen Jodock" on page 14 is a short listing of Gunhild & Ole Amundson's family in which Ole is described as: "Ole Amundson Gjelborne fra Voss. Farmer ved Wildrose, North Dakota."
The Bergen departure lists the name as Ole Amundson Gilbaaren: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIBERG
Perhaps Gjelborne = Gilbaaren?
Another invisible thread: There is a Lars Gilborn (who married a Mary Syverson)b. 1884 d 1964 buried in St. Pauli Lutheran churchyard near Wildrose. Mary Syverson is a sister to Anne Syverson who married Ole Nilsen Jodock and Kristine Syverson who married Syver Jodock. Ole Amundson and the Jodock brothers and Lars Gilborn were among the charter members of the St. Pauli church formed in 1914 according to the Wonder of Williams book....

Hi
Lars Gilborn is also found in the Bergen emigrants list:
Bergen 1175 1909 April 13 Lars Amundsen Gildbaarene m ug Banearbeide 1884 25 Voss Flaa Hallingdal AmkRoy No Dak Nei a (bedre fortj) Farmarb Reiser til familie Cunard
There is no "Roy" North Dakota that I know of but there is a Ray North Dakota in Williams County. Interesting Lars was living in Flaa and was traveling to family...
