I have a great great grandmother that is supposedly from Hitterdal, Norway. I have found a Hitterdal in Sør-Trøndelag on the map, but am wondering if there is another Hitterdal, since I expected her to be from the southern part of Norway? Specifically, the Telemark region.

I appreciate any help you can give.
Take care, Wanda

Yes, there is. Hitterdal, sometimes called Heddal in Telemark. I believe that area is now in the region known as Notodden. The area is covered by an old bygdebok by Holte.

Thank you, Hopkins! I was looking at maps and thought that it must of had a name change, but wasn't finding anything.

I'll search that area! This is part of my mother's side of the family and I haven't done any research on her Norwegian ancestors, only the Danish part.

Thanks again, Wanda

Hopkins,

Now I really need to thank you, because for our trip to Norway next year, I had already planned on going to Hjartdal in Telemark to see family farms from my father's side of the family and Heddal is very close to there. I'll be able to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. That is very helpful, when trying to plan our trip.

Thanks again, Wanda

Tell me (us) about your Hitterdal family connection. Perhaps we can help narrow down the location?
I have ancestors also from Hjartdal, Gransherad and Hitterdal/Heddal.

If this would be repeating work already done - just ignore my suggestion.

Hi Wanda,
my g.g.grandfather John Gregarsen came from Ryen in Hitterdal (Heddal) in Telemark.
Hitterdal is next to Hjartdal.

Thanks for your offer to help, but I don't have much to go on yet. I need to get in touch with some distant family members who have more info on her. Once I do, I'll post a new topic with her name. I only have her married name and she married in the US in 1856.

If anyone wants to e-mail me with a good place to stay in the Hjartdal/Heddal area, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks again, Wanda
