Just a note on churches with Staff burials. Your Staff family seems to have lived in Ringsaker parish, and this church is probably a good one to visit. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Norway, located on a slope overlooking Lake Mjøsa. However, it is unlikely you will find any headstones from your family before they emigrated. Graves are recycled in Norway, and the headstones are then either turned over to the family, crushed, or sometimes placed around the cemetery wall. The normal period for a grave to be preserved is presently about 25 years. There are exceptions, however, and you may also find more recent graves of descendants that did not emigrate. The church office for Ringsaker parish is on the grounds, so you can probably inquire there. But you might want to check the cemeteries at Nes Church and Stavsjø Church. I recall that I have seen several headstones at these churches with the name Staff. Nes is the peninsula sticking into Lake Mjøsa. It lies to the south of Ringsaker Church. Nes Church is particularly worth a visit, as it is a beautiful church located just across from Helgøya, the scenic island in Lake Mjøsa. |

There are several farms in the area with the name Stav or Staff. But I think the one you want is Store Stav near Brumunddal. The address is Rørsvegen 69A, 2384 Brumunddal. You can see it on the map on this link http://www.seeiendom.no/?q=0412-206/1
Mo farm is in Moelv. There is not much left of it, since a new school is being built on the property. I am not sure whether any of the old buildings are still standing, and if so, they are probably not recognizable if you should have an old photo. But you could scan the photo and send it to foto@domkirkeodden.no This is the photo department of Hedmark Museum. They might be able to identify it and find some other ones. |

I am not sure if hilinegal remains active, but I saw these posts on the Norway-Heritage site from 2007 regarding John Staff. If I have done my research correctly, John Staff had a sister, Odrun, who was born in 1890 in Helena, MT after the family arrived in the states. If I have the right people, I believe John was born in 1874. Odrun was my wife's great grandmother. Odrun had a daughter, Margaret, who had a son Richard, and Richard is my wife's father. We are planning to do in 2019, what it looks like you did in 2007 - travel to Norway, take Richard and try to piece together some of the geneaology and include Ringsaker on our trip. I have gathered what I can from this string, and the links, but wondered if you were able to compile other information, and if you'd be willing to share it. Any info your willing to share is appreciated. Thank you. |
