I am looking for a ships register that might have the family of Guttormsen, Jens Andreas with children. He was a widower. I believe the ship was the Wilson Line SS Angelo. If anyone has this list I would greatly appreciate a copy. ( The info I have shows a departure date from Christiania on 03.06.1887 with arrival in NY USA. I have always interpreted that as Mar 6 1887 but now wonder if that is departure June 3 1887. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The best record you'll be able to find is the police registers of people leaving that port. I'll copy a few sentences from an excellent article on that topic on this website and then give you the direct link to the full article -
"There are no specific passenger lists existing for feeder ships sailing between Norway and other European ports. The emigration registers are the only outbound source. There are no surviving inbound passenger lists for these ships in England or Germany."
The specific article is entitled "Norwegian Emigration Records" (by Børge Solem, 1999, 2007)
Norwegian Emigration Records

The database entries of the Guttormsen family leaving from Oslo/Kristiania -

Guttormsens (on or about 3 June 1887)

If you want to see the original handwritten lists those can be found on LDS microfilm.

According to the Philadelphia Passenger Lists, Jens A age 48, Gunhild age 20, Jensine age 12, Gusta age 10, Hildor age 7, Tora age 5, Anna age 2, and infant arrived in Philadelphia on 8 Jun 1887 from Liverpool, England on the ship Lord Gough. Of course, it also said that they were born in Germany and that Gunhild was his wife! Obviously, errors.

What fantastic information! I checked out the ships register for the Lord Gough and sure enough there is was. And all info is the same as the Angelo except the two items that Tami mentioned. Thank you so much!

Great! Do you already have all the info after they moved to the US then?

I have some of it. I know they did make it to Ada MN as they said on the Angelo roster. And Anna, the 2 year old, was my grandmother. But between their arrival in 1887 and her marriage in 1903, I have little of the info. Two of the children died shortly after their arrival in Norman County MN, but do not know why. Have lost track of Jens. I have him on a ships log returning from Norway again in 1903, but his name is lined through, and that is where the trail ends. This entry is on the Hekla Feb 05 1903, a month before Anna was married. Also, I cannot find out what happened to Elen, the mother of this crew. Jens shows as widower with an 8 month old, so Elen Halvors. must have died within the 8 months before the family traveled to MN. Also, there was a son listed in a baptism register in Svelveg Norway, Andreas, that never shows again either. These are loose ends I would like to tie up. Thank you for asking and any advice will again be greatly appreciated.

I am extremely sorry! I had forgotten that the email address was at one time used to submit queries to my web site. I have now changed my email address in my profile so this should not be a problem in the future. This site has been so very helpful I am devastated to have caused a problem.

Jens Guttormsens wife Ellen Halvorsdatter died Oct 16 1886, see #15 just one month after Haldor was born Sept 12 1886.

Thora Caroline Meland b 24 Oct 1881 died in Hennepin Co, Minnesota on 20 Apr 1973. Anna Theodora Goskeson b 12 Dec 1884 died in Mower Co, Minnesota on 4 Jul 1963. Do you have info on Thora's family?

Do you know which children died soon after arriving in Minnesota? Except for Jens and Anna (since she's your grandmother), which children do you need info on?

Thank you all for the information. I have spent several hours in the archives today and have gleaned so much information!

Jens Andreas Guttormsen (Guttorm Torgersen) was born 27 Sep 1839 in Hurum, Buskerud, Norway, and died Aft. 1903.

He married Elen Halvorsdr 15 Dec 1872 in Norway, daughter of Halvor Olsen. She was born 22 Oct 1845 in Norway, and died 16 Oct 1886 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.

Children of Jens Guttormsen and Elen Halvorsdr are:
Hans Andreas Jensen, born 03 Feb 1873 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.
Jensine Annette Jensdr, born 13 Sep 1874 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.
Gusta Eleanore Jensdr, born 21 Aug 1876 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway; died 15 Sep 1887 in Ada, Norman, Minnesota, USA.
Hildor Katherine Jensdr, born 08 Apr 1879 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.
Thora Karoline Jensdr, born 24 Oct 1882 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.
Anna Theodore Jensdr, born 12 Dec 1884 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway.
Haldor Jensen, born 23 Sep 1886 in Strommen, Vestfold, Norway; died 25 Aug 1887 in Ada, Norman, Minnesota, USA.

There was one 20 year old that accompanied the family, Gunhilde Guttormsen, age 20, that I am sure will turn out to be a niece or other relative, but have not located her yet.

It has been a fruitful and wonderful two days!
