Hello everyone!
I recently found this site and am very excited with the info i've already found. I really need some help tracking down the Sandin family from Sweden.

Peter D. Sandin came to Ellis Island from Sweden in June of 1903. He came here with his wife Anna S. Sandin. They had a son in the USA on August 5th 1913 his name was Carter William Sandin. He had a sister named Cagsa A Sandin, she was born around 1919. They came to Ellis Island from the port of Copenhagen on the ship Hellig Olav (Scandinavian America Line).

Carter W. Sandin is my great-grandfather. I'd really, really like to learn more about the Sandins that remained in Sweden, and also what ever happened to Peter, Anna, Cagsa, and Carter. My family is not real forthcoming with information. I'm trying to find this info out on my own. It's really important to me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

I also saw a Peter Sandin arriving on the Hellig Olav in June 1903, but I'm curious as to why you think that is the correct Peter Sandin? I don't see his wife with him and he's the wrong age.

On the 1920 US Census that Les listed, it states that Peter arrived in 1899 and Anna in 1903, so you are looking for two different ships. The 1930 US Census states that Peter came in 1902 and Anna in 1903.

There has to be a 1910 US Census for them and since Carter Sandin was born in Illinois in 1913, they may have been in Illinois in 1910.

I helped an American friend with Swedish ancestors a few years ago - the biggest obstacle to overcome was to find some information about WHERE in Sweden they had come from. We got some hints from the Sweden-List (mailing list on RootsWeb.com) because there were several people there who had purchased the Swedish emigration CD(s?) and did quick look-ups for us that we used to narrow down to just a few possible areas.
After that, we used the Swedish church records (available on LDS microfilm) to find the correct family location by matter of elimination and were able to verify a respectable sized family tree of ancestors/siblings/etc. The LDS publishes a good Research Guide for Sweden and we studied advice about using Swedish resources from a website called SweGGate.
American records such as obituaries might list a location in Sweden, and perhaps other items such as church records of the congregation(s) where they attended church in the US might include some notation of where originally baptised and/or confirmed.

Good luck!

Hi All,

I just wanted to add that you might want to check with the Swedish American Historical Society http://www.swedishamericanhist.org/sweden_web_links.html
There might be something on there that can help you.

Also, you can get a short subscription with www.genline.com and look through Swedish Church Records. I've never used genline, but I know others have found it useful.

Depending on where you live, if you happen to be in the Midwest, I'd talk to your library and see if they have the cd's of Swedish Church Records or ask where you can view them.

Take care, Wanda

I saw the post looking for info on Carter Sandin. I know it was from 2007 but I wanted to tell you what I know anyway. Carter Sandin was my mother's uncle. My mother is Sigrid Pugh. Her mother was Karin Sandin. My Grandmother, Karin is still alive in South Bend Indiana. Carter had a daughter name, Sandra. I visited Sandra and her husband, Ron in Ft. Myers, Florida back in the late 70s. I would love to learn more about my Swedish heritage. I just found this site and I have never done any kind of research into it before.
