I just joined the group. My great grandfather reportedly arrived in Canada 1903 from Norway. I haven't a lot more information than his name, family members and dates of birth. A German friend touring Norway was unable to find the birthplace which we have as Brono, Helgeland, NORWAY
Where do I start? I'd possibly be interested in transcribing the passenger list if I can find it and if it's not already done.

Chances are that the birthplace was Brønøy in Norland county. You will find scanned parish records from 1677 to 1917! Good search! |

He must be from Brønnøy / Brønnøysund in Helgeland, a part of Nordland county.
You can start by searching the emigrant lists from Trondheim, which is the most likely port of emigration for people from that area.

Thank you for your help. I just found on Google Earth this place. Brønnøy is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Is this the same place as Brono (see my message of 14 months ago)? How do I find the "scanned parish records from 1677 to 1917" that eibache refers to?
to Hopkins - Yes, I'd be glad to give you dates and people he travelled with, if you are still willing to help. Sounds like a good British name, Hopkins ??
Thanks! Tulin |

Yes we think that Brono, Helgeland is a way to write Brønnøy, Helgeland in Nordland County. Parish records can be found here Click on Digitised parish registers and then Read the digitised parish registers. You then have to select Nordland county and look for the Brønnøy Parishes coming up. The more background info you have, the easier? your search will be. Reading the handwritten records may also be a challenge! Without names and dates/years it is not much that can be done.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.
The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage. The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage. After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English. Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].
Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
