My research suggests that ggGrandfather, Ole Karl Jonsen, was born in 1811 in Nordalens Præstgjeld, Gjerde farm, Møre og Romsdal. But so far I cannot find when and where he died.
He was married in 1846 to Gurine Rasmusdtr Lingaas, who was born in 1823 in Norddal and died after 1900 -- I would also like to find specifically when. By the time of the 1900 Census, she was living on Kavli (Grytten) as a føderådsenke, apparently with her daughter and son-in-law (see below).
Up to 1855, Ole Karl Jonsen and his family lived on Gjerde farm, but then traded his interests in that property for Grønningsæter (also in Norddal), which he then sold off in pieces.
I think Ole Karl's parents were Jon Jonsen Gjerde (b. 1780 and d. 1844, both in Norddal) and Torine Ellingdtr Heggen (b. 1783, m. 1807 and d. 1866 -- all in Norddal I think).
Ole Karl and Gurine had eight children, seven of whom survived. With help from others on this forum, research suggests six of these seven survivors emigrated, including my gGrandfather Johan Olsen.
I think the only sibling to stay in Norway was Inger Regine Olsdtr (b. 19-Sep-1847 in Norddal, d. ?). Some time before 1886 she apparently married a Fredrik H. (full name unknown), listed as having been born in 1840 in Norddal Rom. They apparently had at least two children born in Norddal: Tomas Fredriksen (b. 1886) and Marie Fredriksdtr (b. 1890).
If I could find any living descendents of Tomas or Marie, they would probably be my closest relatives still living in Norway. Any research hints would be most welcome.
PS: We were in Norway last August and we found and photographed all these old family farmsteads. It was most satisfying to see the actual sites.

Ole Johnsen, his wife Gurine and the 7 children at Grønningseter in 1865, see here. Ole Karls christening record from Jan 5 1811 is no 8 from the top on the left column on the left page here. Ole Karl was 37 years old when he married Gurine, see #10 Inger and Karl Frederik Hansens son Thomas Jørgen was born Aug 14 see #20

"Norddal bygdebøker" by Leonhard Tafjord didn't give death information?? Have you thoroughly researched in the Norddal parish church records? (many of those for the time period 1760-1939 are scanned and online). The probate records for the area?
You have some reason to believe that the sister "Inger" and her family stayed in Norddal? You found them in the later Norwegian census there? |

They live at the Kavli Ytre farm in Grytten in 1900.
And that's where their children Tomas Fredriksen (b. 1886) and Marie Fredriksdtr (b. 1890) are born also, on the Kavli farm in Grytten parish, not Nordal.

I see. Thank you Jan Peter. I took the time to look at ALL TFOlsen's previous postings here and the long long list of information given in return. The information previously given does not seem to have been fully organized and/or utilized by the originator of the inquiries. |

Excellent input thus far...my thanks. Let me add a couple responses, as well.
The Ættebok section of Tafjord's Norddal Bygdebøker (page 116, Gjerde paragraph 112) is unfortunately silent on the date of Ole Karl Jonsen's death.
I can do more with the Norddal church records, but given their minimal indexing it would help greatly if I had a closer approximation of the date of death. But I'm willing to do a more labor-intensive search.
Same for the probate records? This is an assumption on my part, since I'm a stranger to Norwegian probate records. Can I get to those somehow through arkivverket.no?
I appreciate the corrections on Thomas Jorgen Fredriksen and Marie Fredriksdtr being born in Kavli Ytre (Gryttens). Depending on how up-to-modern the online church records are for Hen i Grytten, perhaps I can find a record of either marrying and having children.
So what I know so far about that little family is as follows:
Karl Fredrik Hansen b. 1840 Norddalen Rom, d. ? + Inger Regine Olsdtr b. 19-Sep-1847 Norddalen, m. before 1886, d. ? children Thomas Jorgen Fredriksen b. 14-Aug-1886 Kavli Ytre (Gryttens), d. ? Marie Fredriksdtr b. 1890 Kavli Ytre (Gryttens) d. ? |

Inger and Karl Frederiks daughter Gina Marie was born Aug 6 1890, see #21. They married Dec 2 1883, see #6. Karl Frederik 23 years old (the birth year in the 1900 census is wrong!) came from Indreejde and his father was Hans Iversen. He was born June 25 1860 and his christening record is #23, his mother was Katrine Knudsdatter. Karl Frederik, his parents and siblings in 1865 is here, his father however is not Hans Olsen, it is definitly Hans Iversen, the christening records for both of his brothers confirm that, see #21 and #14 |

Torines death record is #38 For Gurines birth record Aug 1823 see #25 show that her parents were Rasmus Nilsen and Else Jensdatter at Lingeaas. Else Jensdatter, her parents and siblings in 1801 is here. Rasmus Nilsen could be #602 here. Rasmus and Else married June 10 1810. |

Many thanks, eibache!
This is a big help. I'm busy getting copies of all these references and posting the revisions and extensions to my database.
My goal is to summarize what's documented about our Norwegian "Olsen" relatives, integrated with photos of the Norddal homesteads that we took in our August trip there, and distribute by Christmastime a written progress report to my siblings and cousins here in the US.
A longer-term goal remains finding descendents of my few relatives who chose to stay in Norway. |
