Thanks to all. I will stop fretting over this, start doing "smart research," print as much information as I can on doing research in Norway, and let it be my nighttime bed reading material. Wow - so much to learn. I have been involved in research for many, many years and this is definitely different than any of my US research. It makes it even more interesting to learn something different.

Don't fret. With a little study and perhaps a little more time it will suddenly sink in and make perfect sense. It is actually a VERY logical system and helps immensely in tracking a family line back into time.

The one thing that was hardest for me to get used to - was that you can NEVER expect that spellings will 'standardize'. Always think 'sounds like' - if it would sound the same - it could be the same. We're Norwegians! we come from a long line of 'creative' spellers.

Most of all - have fun!

As an example..., take the firstname Bendik.

The most common spelling for that name in the 1865-census was undoubtedly Bendix and Bendik, but the following firstname-variations can also be found in the same census:

Bendek, Bendex, Bendic, Bendich, Bendicht, Bendick, Bendict, Bendig, Bendigen, Bendigs, Bendigt, Bendigth, Bendigts, Bendigx, Bendiks, Bendikt, Benedicht, Benedickt, Benedict, Benedigh, Benedigt, Benedik, Benedikt, Bennedix, Bændik, Bændiks, Bændikt...
