I am trying to find any information about a Norwegian seaman called Ingvald Anker Bjorn, who is my son-in-law's grandfather.
I have found that he was a cook on the Oslofjord when she was sunk off the River Tyne, England in December 1940. He then worked as a cook in Newcastle upon Tyne until 1942.
We know nothing else about him and would be pleased to know if anyone has any information about him or could suggest any possible sources of information.
Thank you

Dear Kare
Thank you very much for the information about the Oslofjord, which I have copied. I hope you don't mind me asking, but please could you suggest how I could discover where Ingvald was born?
Thank You Gloria

You don't know what happened to Ingvald Anker Bjørn after 1942? Was he killed during the war?

The ship M/S OSLOFJORD (II) was en route Liverpool - Newcastle to be re-build as a transportship for troops when it hit a mine outside Tyne. 1 person was killed. The owner of the ship was "Den Norske Amerikalinje A/S, Oslo", but it was managed by an organisation called Nortraship (Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission) since April 1940, when the war broke out (in Norway).
Nortraship was established by the Norwegian authorities in London in April 1940, to manage the Norwegian merchant fleet.

Going just by the name "Ingvald Anker Bjørn" without no other information is quite hard. When was he born? If he was doing military service, he could be born ab. 1920? Did he ever apply for an Uk citizenship?

Hi,
this seems to be a hard nut to crack.

Bjørn as a last name is very unusual in Norway today, as 1. name its very common, the problem is you get only the 1. names seeking online, or since Bjørn means Bear there is a problem.

Last name Anker,
total about 2400 in Norway.

The whole Norwegian merchant fleet was registerd in the shipping company Nortraship during WW2.

All ore most of the registers including the names, dates etc of 50 000 crewmembers in Nortraship are kept at Statsarkivet in Oslo, still a lot of it are unclassified.

That´s all I can help you with at the moment.

Hello,
I wonder if not Ingvalds mother surname could be Anker and his fathers surname was Bjørn.

Enter Digitalarkivet and on right side use "Etternavn-lik-Bjørn", press "Hald fram" and watch 98 persons with surname Bjørn in 1900, do the same conserning Anker and watch 133 persons with surname Anker.
Most likely two of them could be Ingvald parents.

The archive: Nortraship London 1940-47 kept on Riksarkivet in Oslo (not online) has a register (down page): Maritime Department containing 18 meter shelf room and a register "Ships and crew" arranged alphabetly on shipnames containing "all" kind of information concerning the crew.

Catalogue 1288.2/23 and 1288.2/24

Hello Kare,
Thank you for the suggestions, however I think we must get a different page layout in England .When I go to Digitalarkivet the computer displays a page with headings Databaseveljaren (on left) and Documentasjon (on right) . I could not find anything on the right side, and nothing with "Etternavn" anywhere, I have tried several times but always have the same result, I am writing to Riksarkivet in Oslo to ask if they can help.
Thank You Gloria.

Hello Jan Peter,
I have my son-in-law' father's birth and baptism certificates from 1942, where the father's name is recorded as Ingvald Anker Bjorn and he is described as an hotel chef.
The only other evidence of him is a small photo of him in chef''s uniform standing near the stern of a ship. When we enlarged this photo we were able to decide the name of the ship was the Oslofjord.
Gloria.

Hello again,
I would like to thank you both for your interest and help. The National Archive in Oslo have replied to my enquiry and I now know Ingvald Bjorn's date and place of birth and that he died and was buried in Scotland in 1944.

Many Thanks Gloria
