Thank you Eibache, That is her. I am trying to find if and when they went to the US, Maybe Wisconsin. There are so many Christian Olsens it is hard to know the right one. Renee
This could be him leaving from Oslo 1870, Mai 24: Kristian Olsen m G Best. Af Dahl Træsl.fabr. 34 Eidsvold La Crosse Norsk Spd. 66 Scotia In the same cabin: Olava Emilie f u 11 Eidsvold La Crosse Norsk Spd. 66 Scotia
Since the Kristian Olsen you are looking for was the father of Anna Hulda, the one leaving Oslo May 24 1870 must be him - his occupation in both records is manager of the Dahl mechanical pulp mill. His daughter Olava Emilie however should have been 15 years old, not 11.
They arrived in New York on the SS Anglia 8 June 1870 in Steerage Class, from Glasgow. He is on the ship's manifest as E Olson age 34, and Olava is 11. They are on the middle of the page, and his name is partially hidden by a crease, so his first initial was read as an E instead of a K. No other helpful information.
Children's ages on the passenger films are often younger than their actual age. The fare changed at age 12. We have one group of 3 emigrant families, with 17 children, and not a one is over the age of 11. All of the children's ages were adjusted so that the oldest was age 11. One set of my ancestral grandparents was even 5 years younger on their passage.
Good question Einar. I have been wondering that also. Per the 1865 census, Christian, Marthe, and four of their children were born in Christiana. Are the birth records for Christiania on line? I don't know which Christiania archives to search!
If they lived in Eidsvold, would they travel to Christiania for the birthing of their children?
The daughter Ragna, born at Flogstadeiet in Ullensaker April 29 1865, see #182 was baptized Ragna Mathilde. The son Olav Christian was born Aug 9 1862 at Galgebjerg10 in Christiania, see #59 he was baptized Oluf Christian. Olava Emilie was an "uægte" child, born April 10 1855, see #53 parents were both living at Enerhougen in Kristiania, they were Pige (Maiden) Marthe Olsdatter 22 1/2 year old and malerarbeider (painter) Christian Olsen.
Here is the big surprise! See left page top Engagement record for Ungkarl, (bachelor) Malerarbeider (painter) Oluf Christian Johannessen and Pige (maiden) Marthe Olsdatter Enerhougen Oslo. They were married Aug 17 1856. Oluf Christian was son of separated wife Mdm. Christiane Olsen, født Niemann and bachelor, clerk Christian Johannessen. He was born July 4 1836, bapt. Sept 18 and confirmed April 3 1853 in Vår Frues church. Marthe Olsdatter was daughter of Ole Olssen and Elen Johanne Pedersdatter. She was born at Gran Nov 15 1832, bapt. Dec 2 and confirmed in Ager Oct 3 1847.
Marthe Olsdatters baptismal record is #1 she was born out of wedlock, parents Ole Alfsen and Elen Johanne Pedersdatter Framstad. Oluf Christians (Christian Olsens) confirmation record is #37 his mother Christiane was separated at that time. Christiane Dorothea Nieman was married to Ole Olsen June 23 1820, see #40 She was then a divorced wife and Ole Olsen was a servant for Marcus Pløen.
Could someone please look up the daughter Anna Hulda Olsen born Eidsvold 19 08 1869 to find her emigration records for 1889. She went to America but do not know where. Thank you, Renee
FREE PASSAGE TO NORTH-AMERICA - On the S/S Manchester Shipper in 1902 - In 1902 several thousand people were witnesses to the departure of one of the most spectacular crowds of emigrants ever to have left the port of Kristiania. This happened when almost 500 young Norwegians boarded the S/S Manchester Shipper at Vippetangen for a free passage to Canada
