Hello - I wonder if I can find when my grandfather would have joined the mariner service at about 1860 from Flekkefjord. Is there a place I can search on-line?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Helen, I have also been searching for a seaman for some time. In the replies under my posting just a few below yours is an article you can access that gives you some hope. Apparently 2 factors give you an advantage over me; 1.You seem certain of the place he enlisted at. 2. The date of 1860 is at the very beginning of a period where registration is more likely to be accessed than earlier. Good luck but to do it on line might be a big ask. Brian McLean.

Thanks Brian. I did read the article you referenced and also, further down, found a link to mariner's records - written in Norwegian. There are distant relatives still in Flekkefjord, Norway and I plan to get in touch with them to see if they will do the research there.
Hope you have luck finding your relative.
I noticed a lot of responses for someone who requested information on a certain name. As a new person, is this helpful? Should I perhaps post my gr-grandfather's name and dob?
Any help is appreciated!
Helen

Anyone local prepared to research an translate would be gold in this type of research. Posting of as much detail as you have is certainly very worthwhile, but only to facilitate what you are looking for. Don't waste the time of the very helpful experienced people who respond on this forum.
Also have you tried direct contact to the relevant State Archive Office for the area you think your relative enlisted. They will not do extensive research but may tell you if the records you seek are held.
