Would someone be so kind and explain how the Norwegian dates work? For instance what is "Trin or Trinit" mean? I have found another ancestor, Anne Sophia Nielsdatter (b. 1782 Rakkestad, Ostfold )- on page 28 at: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?uid=20998&urnread_imagesize=gigant&show=18#bunnen - and I don't know the month she was baptised. It looks like it was on the 7th of ?? 1782

Thanking you in advance for any help!

Hi, this is Latin...

She was christened Dom. 7 p. Trin. 1782, ie. Dominicia 7th post Trinitatis 1782

Dominicia = Sunday
Trinitatis = Sunday after Whit Sunday (Pentecost)

So the christening was on the 8th Sunday after Whit Sunday, ie. July 14th 1782.

Thank you for your help!!! Unfortunately, this is all "Greek" to me and as you can see I don't know "Latin" either! :-) How did you get July 14th? It looks like I need to do some studying about these methods of writing dates! Do you know of a website that I could learn from about these "prehistoric" (to me :-) dates? Also, do you know why some of these records are dated the "usual" way and others are like my Anne Sophia's baptism record?

Thank you again!

It is simply the Ecclesiastical Calendar. Calling a Sunday in spring Easter rather then the day and the month, etc. etc. as you can see from Jan Peter's sampling list above. Some dates are fixed, like Christmas day, others change every year, like Trinity and Easter.

There are links to various websites about the Ecclesiastical/Religious calendar dates available through Cyndi's List -
http://www.cyndislist.com/calendar.htm#Religious

For example, THIS coming Sunday, the 20th of April 2008, would be the 4th Sunday after Easter or might also be called by another title, Dominica Cantate. Trinity this year falls on 18 May, and the 1st Sunday in Advent will be 30th of November.
