He was born in 1855 and was my great-great grandfather. He emigrated to Minneapolis via Quebec and Chicago, but we don't know when.

His son- my great-grandfather, Henry Ludwig Hertzenberg, died at the age of 36 in 1929. We believe he was born in Minnesota, so Carl would have probably sailed between 1855 and 1893. We have few records about his family. Carl lived to be 100 years old and was president of the Sons of Norway. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello again! The link below has a picture of Carl's family, probably in 1865 when he was 10 years old. (Click on Lars Hertzenberg photo near the bottom of the page.) Based on the 1865 census information you so graciously linked me to, I'm guessing that the picture doesn't include his oldest sister, Alette, and his oldest brother, August. There are 2 little girls in the photo whose identities are unknown.

I'm wondering if Carl's mother was married before and who the girls might be?

Also, after checking the 1875 census in Ullensaker, I noticed several unfamiliar household names in both Lars Olsen Hertzenberg's farm and the one that Carl's sister, Petra, lived on with her husband, Hans Nafstad and her brother, Pauli Hertzenberg. Any background information on those people and the connections to my Hertzenberg relatives? Thank you so much for all your assistance! Shari

when Carls parents married his mother was "pige" - had not been married before. If the photo with parents and 3 sons and 3 daughters was taken approx 1865 it does not reflect the 1865 census where Lars and Kari had 4 sons and 2 daughters. Could you name each person (from left to right) in the photo?
The 1875 census does not indicate that Lars and Kari had any more children than in the 1865 census.

I don't know if it may be of interest, but Carls brother Oluf was baptized Oluf Frøidelin, see #139

I'm guessing in the photo that the order is Pauli, Lars, Petra, Carl, Oluf and Kari with the two unknown little girls.

Thank you! Shari

I am afraid I do not think that the two unknown girls are the cildren of Lars and Kari.
