In reviewing the 1865 Norway Census-for 1711 Meraker (Øvre Stjørdal prestegjeld) yesterday for my G-G-Grandfather, Mikkel Olson, I noticed something I missed previously: His mother is listed as living with him, Brynhild Johnsdatter, born in Rennebu, 76 years old. She is listed as Føderaadskone, which I found was a sort of pensioner, receiving support from the son who has taken over the farm. (Or new owner). I am thrilled to bits, as this generation was previously not known by anyone in the family! I calculated her age at the 1801 Census, and found in 1801-telling for 1636 Meldal someone who is the only person the right age, with the right name: Brynil Jonsdtr. 11, Father Jon Ellevsen 65, Mother Hille Jonsdtr. 54. Farm is Kalvhagen. I find no farms with this exact name, although there are many which begin with "Kalv". Some Church books for this area are online, but are unstructured. I've been through the years I thought she might have been confirmed but didn't find anything. And no idea when or where they may have married or had other children. **My question is, are there any sources online that might help bridge the gap between 1801 and 1865? Or help me prove or disprove whether this person is in fact the right person or just a coincidence? Or will I need to dig into records offline in order to find Brynhild's marriage and other children?** Any pointers would be much appreciated! |

I assume you have Mikels parents, cotter Ole Mikelsen and Brynild Johnsdatter at the Stordal farm, see Mikels birth record #62 Brynilds parents Joen Ellefsen and Helle Joensdatter were married May 24 1768, see the record at the bottom of the right column on the lefthand page here

Wow - I try to cover all research bases before asking a question here, and I always find out how much I don't know yet! Thanks! Les, you are correct that Skierv is the farm name listed at the top, but in that same column, other farm names are listed periodically. I assumed that meant a new farm ... can you please enlighten me as to what the other farm names mean? I spent over two hours going through the Meldal church book for what I was guessing were the right time periods, but guess I'm not proficient enough at reading the records yet ... Thanks for the links! eibache, I DIDN'T have Mikel's birth record, just had the date from family. Now that I see your link, it seems so clear I don't know how I missed it...Thanks! I only just found Brynild and now another whole generation to the family tree with Brynild's parents!! Thanks! One of the reasons that I am reviewing my previous research is because I have learned so much from just reading the generous teachings in all the posts on this forum, I am going back over everything that I did when I knew less ... obviously have a long way to go! Hopkins's great lesson the other day on changing the Parish record settings at the top to improve citations got me going over all my previous parish record citations and updating them ... great improvement! Thank you all for your "teachings" and generous sharing on this forum! |

Les, I see from the link to Brynhild's birth record that you gave that the farm name is listed with the main farm first together with the other as the last portion "Skiervkalvhagen", so now I know the answer to my farm name question! Thanks very much!! |

Caaraj,
I have to ask for an expert's opinion. It is probably the farm name where Jon Ellevsen was born. But there are no farms listed in Sør Trøndelag with that name. Here is the census record:#2957
There are Kalvigen farms in Hordaland and Nordland. Les |

Hoping someone can help me with the location of a farm, if you could please ... in the 1865 Census Brynhild Johnsdatter is living with her son Mikkel Olson on the farm "Volden", noted as "1/17 of the Stordals farm." There are 6 families listed in the 1865 Census as living on that same farm, Volden, 1/17 of the Stordals farm: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61711 and Brynhild is here: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=8&filnamn=f61711&gardpostnr=186&merk=186#ovre
I've been unable to pinpoint the Volden farm. Although I've found the Stordals farm and see several subfarms that may be possibilites, haven't found a match. Here is other information I've researched:
Olaf Rygh: Parish – Meraker, Municipality – Meraker, County -- Nordre Trondhjems amt 6. Volden. Udt. vå1LLen. -- Wold 1664. 1723. Af v&bmaapeno;llr m., Vold, græsbevoxet Slette, se Indl. S. 87.
1886 Farm Census: Knr 1711, Gnr 37, Bnr 1, Mnr 368, Lnr 525,Gnavn Vollan, Bnavn Vollan, Alm. skr. Volden, Sogn Meraker. Knr 1711, Gnr 6, Bnr 1, Mnr 346, Lnr 491, Gnavn Volden, Bnavn Volden søndre, Sogn Meraker. Knr 1711, Gnr 6, Bnr 2, Mnr 346, Lnr 492, Gnavn Volden, Bnavn Volden nordre, Sogn Meraker.
Would greatly appreciate any assistance in identifying the exact location of the farm Volden. Thank you!

It is not likely that you will be able to pinpoint the exact 1/17 part of Stordal where Brynild was born. You may find the area now called Stordalsvollen by using this map In the "Søk" line write Stordal and "Velg" on the left side Meråker and by using the Hybrid function you will find both Stordal and Stordalsvollen (Volden and Vollen is the same place).

Thanks very much Einar, that was my best guess also so if that's as good as it gets, I'll go with it! Do you know of a way to copy and paste those photos into a document (not for sale of course, just for use as reference on a trip)? In the past I've tried using the email function also, but it's just a link to the live page and although I see some others who seem to manage it and past the photos into the forum here, I just can't make it work. Any advice? Thanks very much for the response! |
