My english isn't perfect - but I usually understand what people are writing - and it seems like I'm understood, too.

But I don't understand the point in the new splitting in so many forums. It was hard enough to see the connection between the name and content of the old splitting - now it's impossible (for me).

Digitalarkivet has done it the other way round - minimalized the number of forums. Because it's easier to administrate and because people are not structured enough to put their questions in the right forum.

I see the point in splitting discussions about "passenger lists", "ships" and "genealogy". But the rest?

Why? (And with no search option I really had a hard time refinding the Edvin Zahl Nilsen piece...)

Otherwise KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !! :-)))

The Edvin Zahl Nilsen quest started a little undefined but there was as I recall a lot of mentioning about a sailor, but yes, it could just as well have been moved to General genealogy. (If it is a wish, I will move it)

Splitting the board was done to make it more user friendly (what I hoped). Like it was before, people were posting questions wherever, with very little thoughts about where the topics were related. Now think about it, the number of posts are closing up to 1000, it will soon become very hard to manage without splitting it up a little. In addition, we have made a display on the index page (Main page) with direct links to the 5 latest posts, which if we want can be altered to show the 10 latest posts.

Another enhancement is that you can now subscribe to the whole board, a forum, or single topics of your choice. If you subscribe to the whole board, you will get an automatic e-mail notification whenever a post is made somewhere on the board. If you limit subscription to categories, forums or down to single topics, you will only get notifications for that. Make a choice. In the e-mail notification you will find a direct link to the topic in question

In any case, I appreciate the feedback, let us evaluate the new structure after a while, hopefully it will only be a matter of getting used to it.

Hello, Børge

You've got some good arguments - and it's your site.

Concerning the "Edvin Zahl Nilsen" question it was not naturally for me to look for it where I found it. As a matter of fact it was THE LAST place I looked. But it isn't up to me - you are "the boss". (Maybe you should ask "nanny"?)

Hope she find my answer, though, it was pretty difficult to find her family...

I am sure nanny will find the topic, as when a topic is moved, the original creator of that topic will get an automatic notification by e-mail, containing a direct link to the topic. I could always move it again to Genealogy - General, and she will get a new notification.

I recommend the subscription to the board, have you considered trying? If later you want to unsubscribe, you can do that with one click, in the same was as you subscribe.

askeroi, being one of the most active members of the board, and a great contributor and helper, your thoughts and suggestions is of great importance.

I'm just trying to "pay back" for the help I got with Jørgen Grave.
And visit this site to see if I can help as often as possible. Your change confused me for a while but you get used to everything!

What more often confuses me is how (some) people think we're psycic and expect us to know what they are searching for without telling. And how "afraid" some are of giving (relevant and) important information like places/times/birthdates/age estimates to help us help them.

But this too has been better lately. So I'll keep on trying to give a helping hand...

Your 10 latest posts have been a great advantage - I don't have to know where it's placed to find new posts. On the other hand it makes it harder to refind them when they're not new anymore :-). Could you expand it to 20?

It would take a lot of space on the main page, so no....
Instead I created a new page showing the last 50 posts:

http://www.norwayheritage.com/ships/forum-50.asp

http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/default.asp

Does that solve the problem?

I included the list of the last 50 posts on the default (main forum page) instead. I hope it functions. Let me know if you run across any bugs, and what you think about it.

Your post here should be a prov that you figured it out pretty well. What you do is:

Go to the main page of the forum (see the little icon looking as a house on top), then find out what under which forum your topic should be posted (Hunting Passenger Lists, or General Genealogy, or one of the other forums), then click on the folder icon on the right side of that forum, and you are ready to go. You can also click to enter the forum you want to post to, there you will then find an icon and a link saying "New Topic" on the top of the forum table.
