An obituary of my 3great grandmother, Mari Johannesdttr, contains the following info -- "...she left Bergen, April 1, 1845 landing in New York, July 4th. We can scarcely realize what those 95 days on an emigrant shp, with the barest necessaries of life, must have meant to her. The chase of their vessel by a pirate ship, from which the darkness of a stormy night saved them, was a never to be forgotten incident of this voyage."
Mari left from Vik, Norway with a good number of other neighbors. According to the parish records the date of departure from Vik was March 17th so an April 1 departure from Bergen seemed to fit. When I checked your list of ships in 1845 I found the passanger list for the brig Albion. This list contained Mari and her parents. However, the departure date is April 30 and the arrival date is July 3. The arrival date does not concern me so much as the departure date as that is a month off. In any event, I wanted to confirm that date and wonder whether ther story of the pirate chase was recorded in any fashion. Thanks for any feedback you might provide -- Kirt Johnson |

Just a comment: Maris father was on the list, but his wife was not Maris mother, according to the baptismal record her mother was Ingebor Ingebrictsdatter, see next to the last record on the right hand page here

Einar -- thanks for the heads up. I hadn't checked Mari's birthrecord yet but I should have known Aase was not her birth mother because Johannes and Aase were married in 1826 -- 11 years after Mari was born (her birth date in both her obituaries was July 29, 1815 so the August date must have been the baptismal date). Mari also had a brother Ingebrigt who was a minister. Mari married Amund Ellingson (Voss, Himle farm) and Amund and Ingebrigt were instrumental in starting a Lutheran church in the Lodi/Arlington, WI area. They were apparantly Lutherans of the Ellingarian denomination following the teachings of Elling Eilson. In any event, Mari, Amund, and Ingebrigt are buried in the Arlington Prairie Cemetery near Arlington, WI. Mari died on Jan 4, 1906, Amund died Oct 20, 1878, and Ingebrigt died Dec. 17, 1894. The markers for Amund and Ingebrigt are still standing but as strange as it may seem, there appears to be no marker for Mari even though she was the most recent to pass away.
Any thoughts on the descrepancy in the departure dates for the ship Albion ? |

Mary was my great great grandmother. According to her memorial account written, her great grandsons; Darwin and Hamlet Ellingson were present and acted as pallbearers at her funeral as well as her grandson, Isaac Iverson. Mary had five children; Elling, Joanna, John, Isaac and
Martha. Her husband Ammund Ellingson had two children, Knut and Anna, prior to their union. Mary's parents died in their second year of their stay. They came to Capron, Ill.but later moved to Argyle, Wisconsin where they both died. My grandfather was Hamlet Ellingson ( Ellington)
The son of Isaac and Sarah Ellingson. Hamlet was born in Madison, Wisconsin April 21st, 1890.
Mary was born in Veik, Bodo, Norway and left Bergen, April 1 st, 1845 arriving in New York July 4th.

Interesting in the Family Tree on Geni, the author got the place right for the father but not for his daughter. Here is the baptism record for Mari.

I did not find the marriage of Johannes Iversen and Ingeborg Ingebrichtsdatter in the parish records for Vik but I did find a marriage for Johannes Iversen and Ingeborg Ingebightsdatter in Leikanger. Might it be the correct couple.
