Can anyone tell me the area of Norway that the Ole Evinrude family came from? I know as a young man he lived in the house that my family has lived in for 60 years in Cambridge, Wisconsin. He was the inventor of the first commercially useable outboard motor. Thanks, Roald Dahlen |

From Wikipedia you can read "Ole Evinrude (egentlig Evenrudstuen) (født 19. april 1877 på Toten, død 1934 i Milwaukee) ---." Ole Evinrude (actually Evenrudstuen) (born April 19. 1877 at Toten, died 1934 in Milwaukee) ---.

I have tried to find the baptisimal record for Ole "Evinrude" to confirm that he was born April 19 1877. I have not had any success. So I have my doubts about the info in Wikipedia. In "Ideafinder" there is another info which is doubtful "Milestones: 1877 Ole Evinrude born April 19, 1877 in Oslo, Norway 1882 Evinrude family moves to American and settles in Cambridge, Wisconsin" - he was definitly not born in Oslo. The family who emigrated in 1882 from Toten was Marthin Olsen, b. Sept 12 1850 (parents Ole Olsen and Helene Halvorsdatter) Karoline Evensdatter, b. more to come |

I think that every American as well who has owned a boat with an outboard motor has heard of Evinrude, but this is the first time I've known its Norwegian history. Thank you! |

This could be Ole's father: Andreas Olsen (38) from Vardal, emigrating to Edgerton (Wisconsin?) on 14 Oct 1881.

Well, Vardal is located in Gjøvik, but it's pretty close to Vestre Toten. The family could have moved around, or could originally be from Toten.

Ft. Atkinson and Edgerton are both within 15 miles of Cambridge where Ole spent most of his early years. My mom just had the barn in back of the house, where Ole probably tinkered with his creative work , torn down. Oh well, it is very neat to have had this very creative son of Norway as a fellow occupant of the house that I was raised in. He is probably the most famous son of Cambridge from the past. Matt Kenseth, the famous Nascar driver, is the present day person who has made Cambridge famous. Matt is also of Norwegian ancestry. Evidently, my ancestors came from the same general area in Norway that Evinrude came to the U.S. from. My ancestors came from the Brandbu--Gran area of Oppland. |
