We have been working on a new search functionality for the passenger lists, and the implementation of a new database containing the Ulvestad "Nordmændene i Amerika" 1907-1913 register. The Ulvestad books were originally printed in Norwegian using the old Gothic types, and transcribing the information is something of a challenge in many ways.

The new search functionality will return hits from both databases simultaneously, the Norway Heritage passenger list database and the new Ulvestad "Nordmændene i Amerika" database. A great new feature is that each person has been given an individual page. We have also implemented a function to post additional information about the person from that page.

The new database is now in Beta testing modus. We need some volunteers to help us with the beta testing. We would like the Beta testers to give feedback on how the functionality feels, and help us by suggesting changes or improvements.

Anyone?

If it is a question about reading the gothic scripts I'll volunteer - hoping to be of service.

Einar, right now it is a question of testing how the search function works, and give feedback on the new features. However, we will soon be asking for volunteers with the remaining transcriprions too, which basically means transcribing the text into an excel format, and some minor translations

Please, we still would like a few people to search the new database as part of the beta testing. You do not need any other skills then some experience with doing search on the Internet. What we want is feedback on how people experiences the new features. Feedback can be given to us in English or Norwegian.

I always feel as though I'm not as good in research as the rest of this forum, but I'll give it a shot!

Thanks Kåre, a link to the beta test page has been e-mailed to you too.

It would be nice if the beta testers could post some of their feedback in this tread, as the different test persons could then discuss their experiences with using the database.

I found it easy to use. Of course, it works best if you do not list a year, unless you are positive of the year of the person's arrival. I searched for family members and found the link between the two very helpful. I'm anxious to see how it works, once we are able to search the entire listings.

I have tested the new Beta data base for some days and found it very interesting, it will be a great supplement in Norway Heritage.
The new links are exiting to work on with varying information and references to persons, farms, municipalities, ship lists etc. and some links to Ulvestad.
I prefere to use name of municipality as keyword, espesially if you are looking for ex. Ole Olsen or simular ordinary names, perhaps some has another experiences.

Martin Ulvestad write in Ghotic but isn´t difficult to read if you compare to the church books, his historian work, 535 pages, "Normændene i Amerika" Norwegians in America, edition; volum 1 in 1907, volum 2. in 1913.
Perhaps you will find your forefathers here.

Here is the register, "Vel side" choose page

I will recommend others to volunteer and give feedback.

Kåre
