This is my GG Grandmother, she travelled to NZ in 1873 on The Hovding, aged 13 with her family: Father: Ole Christiansen Mother: Bollette Olsdatter Brothers: Carl August Christian Sisters: Agnes Ragna Hoping somebody may be able give some information on Olina Jonson/Laurvig's family.

You'll find them included with additional helpful starting information in this link found by using "Forum Search" above. (searched for words Hovding and 1873) Hovding passengers 1873
"Some information" is quite vague -- what exact information are you looking for?

The link I gave you above gives you at least approximate birthyears for each member of the family AND a location within Norway to make your starting point for research. That is a LOT of information.
Who, where and when -- that's how you get started. |

Thank you very much for the information given. I was having trouble finding anything on Bolette Olsdr. For anyone who may be interested, Olina Matilda Christiansen married a swedish man called John Jonson. They had (that I know of) 1 child. She remarried again (after the death of her husband) to Edward Andersen Laurvig. They had 4 children. She died in 1916 in Napier NZ.

Maybe Oline Mathildes baptismal record is of interest, she was born Nov 17 1860, and baptized Dec 2 in Asak church, see #129 Bolette was born Febr 2 1838 and baptized July 8 in Rokke church, see #38 her parents were Ole Johnsen and Ane Catrine Larsdatter at Krogen. Bolette had an older brother John Christian born May 5 1835, see #66

For a better understanding from where in Norway they came from.
Tistedal at Halden town in Ĝstfold county is close to the Swedish border, see Tistedal south-east in this map Here are old pictures from Tistedal, the christening ceremonies before 1865 was taken place in both Berg church from about 1100 or Rokke.

Everyone, thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated. Please excuse my ignorance regarding Norway heritage linage surnames, however, just wondered....are ALL sons given the same (heritage) surname? Example: Ole Christiansen first son surname is Olsen, 2nd son surname Olsen, however both daughters surname Christiansen. Again, thank you for all your help.

this was in the US - in Norway she was Oline Matilde Olsdatter (daughter of Ole) - see 1865 census. |

Hi, this traditional naming for last names in Norway, lasted for more than 1000 years, ended about 1900.
Ole´s son was Olsen and his daughter was Olsdatter/Olsdr. Ole Christiansen was son of Christian and his siblings were Christiansen/Christiansdr.
Oldest son according the tradition was named after his fathers father, 2. oldest son was named after his mothers father, oldest daughter was named after her fathers mother and 2. oldest daughter was named after her mothers mother. If a widow married again it was also a tradition to name her firstborn son after her late husband, for her next children the tradition was paractised again.
If both husbands given name was the same genealogy can be challenging, can be easy to mixup.
Island still practice this naming tradition

Edvard Andersen Laurvig was a widower (if he dont have a namesake in N.Z.) when he married widow Oline Mathilda Olsdr. in New Zealand. He was married to Line Sorensen and had three children when he emigrated from Sĝr Odal, dep. port Oslo on Hĝvding, dest. New Zealand in 1872, about one inch down from top.
