Have been looking for a family who are reported emigrated to USA. I can follow him, Jacob Ericsen to Hull in 1869. His destination was Monroe. The wife, Marthe Nilsdatter Gystad and two of their kids left in 1871. Ticket paid from “Amerika” and destination LaCross via Quebec. This people were Thranitters. A kind of a working class movement in Norway. They were registered and even their friends and family where watched by the government. The leader Marcus Thrane died in Au Clear. Is there any known place where this kind of people lived in USA.?? After being watched and looked after here in Norway they probably changed their names when they had the opportunity. Tom |

Hi,
There are quite a few counties and towns named Monroe. There is a Monroe in Green County, Wisconsin, perhaps that's where they ended up.
Apparently, Marcus Thrane had "friends" in many places in America. When Googled a NAHA page came up that mentioned a "friend" named Christian Westergaard who lived (in 1878) in Buffalo, Dakota Territory. So there may not have been a "colony" of Thranitters.
You might want to include a bit more biographical data on Jacob Eriksen (birthdate, etc.) and his family members. In the 1880 census index at familysearch.org there are 39 Jacob Ericksons. What sort of occupation did Jacob follow?
Anyway, thanks for an interesting search.

Census-1865 And as said above, Andreas & Johan emigrated with their mother in 1871. It looks like Marthe should be ab. 40 yo, and not 50, in the emigration record.

Jacob was a carpenter, but as the rest of his family I do think fishing and hunting also was important. Why work when the food was out there any way. That did not give a lot of money, but if they had to work, timber and sawmills probably was the place to go. Jacob had a hernia and got a hernia belt from the "poor mans help" (translated from Norwegian) They also took care of the wife and the kids (2 rdl. or 2$ a year) until they got the tickets in 1871. Jacob was born 10 jun 1821. His wife was born about the same time. Marte Nilsdatter. The kids was Andreas Jacobsen born 22. nov. 1862 and Johan Nicolas Jacobsen 29.may 1865. Have been looking for them in the censuses, but no luck so far. They are a part of my family and not A1. Stories have been told, novels has been written. Jacobs father have been throve out and taken back and thriven out again. Al documented in the court. Even a TV program used this family as an example some years ago. Lots of exiting things and it has been going on for at least 5 generations. Tom

Fyi, there is a widow named Martha Ericksen (59) in census-1880 for Arcadia, Trempealeau, Wisconsin. A son named John Ericksen lives with her.
Maybe?
Trempealeau county is located between La Crosse and Eau Claire counties. Monroe county is also close to this area.
