I am proud to say that as a result of my research here at Norway Heritage that I have learned that my ancestors are recognized as being some of the first Norwegians to settle an area called Grense Jakobselv in far East Finnmark. This area borders Russia and was disputed territory for some time. The Norwegians attempted to claim this area and built a fantastically beautiful church that was later named Kong Oscar II Kappell, in honor of King Oscar who visited the area.

Can someone translate the following

It was not due to religious endeavors that Grense Jakobselv got a church. The church should have a state legal significance.
It would prove that it was cheaper to build a church than to have a naval vessel lying off the coast to maintain the (Russian) border, or to station out border police for some years ahead.
The Governor (Amtmannen) had repeatedly complained of untenable conditions for the Norwegian "Landhøit" if it (could be) built a chapel on the Norwegian side of the Grense Jakobselv river mouth.
In the Royal decree of September 7th, 1865, it was decided that a church should be erected with the vicarage in Grense Jakobselv.
The cost of 7979 spesidaler was paid by the Information Fund which was supported by the Norwegian Treasury.

Thank you Jan Peter.

There is more.....

Jan Peter. I think I understand in general but I might be missing something here. Can you translate this also please?

Thank you so much!

In Trondheim the group acquired a small jekt. The procession consisted of 23-25 people, among them Gunhild and Anders with 6 children, Anders Olsen Bræk with family, Rasmus Andersen with family, Gunhilds' brother Ole and Anders Arnsten Einum.
The journey northward began April 5th, 1851, and lasted for six weeks with (for them) fine weather throughout the trip.
They stopped in Vardø because several of the children was confirmed there on June 22nd 1851.
After a few weeks stay in Vardø, Anders R. Dahl and Anders Olsen Bræk with families traveled to Grense Jakobselv. They arrived there in mid July 1851. They were the first Norwegian settlers in Grense Jakobselv.

a typical "Jekt"

Hi Jan Peter. Thank you for the translation. The Sletsbøk detailing the Horg familes of Dahl/Nordtomme is confusing. On the one page you just translated it states who was on the jekt. But on the the section of the sletsøk on Brakøen-nedre it states this:

Anders Olsen Braek f 1810 d 2 nov 1887. Begravd 9 nov 1887 i Trondheim (Ila Sogn) g m Fredrikke Charlotte Kjelstrup f 1808 pa Meraker. Charlottes slektninger bodde i Vardø i 1840. ........
Anders hadde vaert leder for denne vedtransporten. Anders og familie var med jekten nordover 1851.

Do I understand that Anders was living in Vardø long before 1851 and that he rented the jekt to bring other members of his family to Vardø?

Yes.
According to a commissioned and non-commissioned officers' register from Vardøhus festning i 1844; it says that Anders started his military service on 21 Apr 1832, and he became a corporal on 15 Jan 183? (vague number), and that he arrived at the company on 5 Jun 1842. It also says Anders is married and have 3 sons. Charlottes relatives lived in Vardø in 1840.

Anders told his relatives about the great possibilities for forest and fishing in Grense Jakobselv, and that there was possibilities for farming in a big scale. Vardøhus festning got their firewood from Grense Jakobselv. Anders was the executive for this firewood transport. Anders and his family accompanied the jekt northwards in 1851.

Vardøhus festning (fort)

Is Anders from Trondheim? If so, it looks like he started his military career around Trondheim, and moved to Vardø on 5 Jun 1842.

Hi Jan Peter. Anders Olsen Braeck is a first cousin to Anders Rasmussen Dahl. I believe the family was from Horrig for some time so I think he is not originally from Trondheim but actually I'm not sure where he was born to tell you the truth.

Jan Peter, can you translate this paragraph please?

Den 3 oct, 1851, lante Anders R. Dahl og Anders O Breckan 200 Spd av Kjøpmann Brodtkorp i Vardø me avdrag og renter over 5 ar. Rasmus A. Dahl undertegnet pa panteobligasjonen for sin far, ander R. Dahl.

It was a difficult time for swimming Gunhild and the rest of family.....

The site translates many different languages, you have to remember that you may be dealing with old style language and not modern Norwegian for example. There are links on Norway Heritage for other online Norwegian dicitionaries that can translate the old words.

Good job Jo Anne. Maybe a little clarification would be in order:
October 3. 1851 Anders R. Dahl og Anders O Breckan borrowed 200 Spd (Specidaler) from merchant Brodtkorp in Vardø with installments and interest over 5 years. Rasmus A. Dahl signed the bond on behalf of his father Anders R. Dahl. The document was registered 22 juni 1852. The document was called off in 1902 in connection with the settlement of the estate after Rasmus. The first homestead transaction in Grense Jakobselv took place October 16 1851: Anders R. DAhl, Anders O Braek (Breckan). Anders Nilsen, Hans Estensen Kveberg and Herman Richard Læbu Dahl. Anders R. Dahl and Anders Brechan recieved a county note on the land May 28 1852. See attachment for description of the survey.
Anders R. Dahl died July 15 1855. Gunhild and the rest of the family got into hard times….

thank you JoAnne and Eibache. I guess I should have made sure all the accents are on the letters because that makes a difference. The site you referenced is fantastic.
Thank you for sharing!
